I am getting max torque & BHP at too hish revs... why???
Hello All
I am an owner of a MY93 WRX with following mods
HKS Air intake system
HKS exhuast system, with full decat etc
HKS 3 port Boost solenoid
HKS EVC Pro 4 Boost controller
HKS FMIC
HKS SSQV Dump Valve
HKS FCD Unit
HKS Boost Gauge
Uprated Fuel pump (new) Warbro
7D ECU
VF34 Turbo - Brand New
Uni-Chip recently mapped at Powerstation
I am running 1.1 Bar boost which is stable and car is running fine, mapped last week and on RR did this
Torque 250Lb -ft @ 5440 RPM 87 MPH
BHP 290 @ 6290 RPM 101 MPH
Power curves where very smooth, a diagonal 45% line, Rich at Powerstation said it does seem to come on late but smooth with it.
What I am wondering is why is this, should I be getting more torque down lower, from graph at 3600 rpm it is at 180LB Torque
I will try to get Dynograph scanned an posted..... From dyno@scoobynet, most cars seem to hit max torque/bhp much lower.
Is this the choice of VF34 turbo being put on (after much consultation on here and Turbo suppliers was told VF34 would provide good spool up and low/mid power but from Dyno looks more at top end?), reason I changed turbo was apparently it was a P1 IHI turbo on there, but no numbers on it anywhere and was noisy (worn Brg's) and spooled up late, just below 4k to hit 1.1 bar boost in 3rd and 4th, this new turbo does hit 1.1 bar at 3,300 rpm 4th and 5th.
Removing hose from turbo wastegate the turbo spools up same, obviously without boost control..
Any ideas why??? guru's you advice would be welcomed greatly...

I would say it has nothing to do with your boost pressure as 1.1 bar @ 3300RPM is not so bad. Problem should come from ignition timings which might be too conservative before 5000RPM.
If you cannot change the timings, you can still raise boost pressure between 3500-4500 RPM, every 0.1 bar will give you a 25 Nm increase in torque.

Depends on how well it was remapped though.
Also, the peak figure is misleading. You can have a peak torque at 6000rpm, which sounds really bad, but maybe it's only 2% higher than the torque at 3000rpm.
what's the torque curve look like?
okay just re read post. Yes you should have more torque and I would suggest ignition timing is lacking, although the figure from the rollers can sometime be dodgy in the spoolup area.

Hello bob and Pavlo
The torque curve is fairly 45 degrees from 1800rpm to 5440 rpm after 5440 rpm it starts to decrease to 215 ish at 7,000 rpm
I will try and get a scan done, but from dyno's i have seen of other Imprezas in past have been torque up very early then a flat line form say 4,000 rpm to 6,000 ish
here's what I am getting
RPM Torque BHP
1800 90 35
2100 98 40
2400 113 50
2700 122 65
3000 147 80
3300 160 100
3600 180 125
3900 190 145
4200 212 175
4500 225 200
4800 235 218
5100 240 237
5400 250 260
5700 246 275
6000 245 280
6300 240 290
6600 225 290
6900 212 285
If you made a chart from this the torque would be nigh on 45 degree line from 1800rpm til 6000 rpm, at 6,00 the power stays to 6,900 and torque starts to curve downward from 5,400 rpm, the power curve is a bit steeper than the torque curve
Bhp and Torque curves cross at 5,800 RPM
Since I have had this car (4 months) I have felt that I was missing something down low rev range.....
Could it be that it has a 7D ECU fitted?
Could it be the choice of turbo VF34 (brand new) although did this before with a susposedly 'p1' turbo fitted
As said it was in Powerstation last week as I fitted a S/H uni-chip and Rich mapped it for me..
Car runs absoultely fine, no leaking hoses etc etc, recent service with plugs.
Your thoughts on this strange matter will be so appreciated!!!!
Cheers
Rob

Hello Again
right then, I now have a scan of Dynograph, Have a look please
I reckon Torque is coming in far too late
