Default Up-pipe on Classics

I may be aquiring an up-pipe for my MY93 WRX and wondered how beneficial these are on the classics?

Any "gotchas" to watch out for? I'll probably wrap the bugger before fitting it.

Errmm the solid up pipe's tend to repeatedly blow the gaskets...

To fit put the front up on axle stands etc.. spray WD40 on all the heatshield nuts and bolts and the downpipe nuts and nuts you can see on the turbo.
Remove the heat shields from the headers whcih I think are 12mm nuts and bolts mainly.. at least a couple of nuts are likely to come unwelded from them..
You only need to remove either side ones the middle can remain.
Spray WD40 on the header retaining nuts and bolts.
Remove the headers which is if I remember correctly two (or it is three?) 14mm nuts on studs on either side to the heads and two bolts to the up pipe.. and off it comes..
Remove the downpipe..
Remove the nuts on top of the turbo flange to uppipe after applying lots of WD40..
this is where I then got stuck as the nut nearest the turbo on the drivers side you need a 14mm 2/3inch drive socket to undo it as 1/2 will not go on it for love not money.. I got annoyed and put it back together.. lol

Never got back to it

Worth porting you headers whilst they are off.

It is possible, honest, but you might not think that when you are half way through! Allow a day and be pleased if you finish early.

i've on my 96 a home made up pipe. despite it's not catalysed, the feeling is incredibly better ! the boost target is made faster.
boost pressure increase about 0.1b, so it's 10 to 15bhp !!...for a simple part of exhaust....

the only trouble that it's really not easy to fit....

little player !!

it's not really difficult, it's a long time work, that's enough....4 or 5 hours

but, to my mind, if you can remove it, it's good !! the gain is real

Red face

I had one fitted to my 93 wrx (the original had cracked). Took the garage 3days and they charged me 10hrs labour (they said it took them even longer than that! I noticed no difference at all!
If you do it make sure you get one with a flexi section.

Don't bother, its really not worth the effort. When you look at a standard up pipe (with out cat) its not that bad as some say. It has a sleeve to smooth the flow over the concertina (sp) section, which causes a small restriction as it isn't flush with the entry but not dreadful. Port the headers - much easier and can give you a nice warm satisfaction feeling afterwards.

Hmm, it is if it was blowing like mine was!

JGM, which gasket do they allegedly keep blowing? Top or bottom?

I'll probably port and wrap the headers at the same time as I fit the up pipe.

Wow 10 hours.....best up pipes are slip jointed that way they expand & contract around the slip joint not the gaskets......I know some guys that usually take about 4 hours to change an upipe....

Even when things go wrong, seized nuts, studs or pulled threads, ten hours is way over the top IMHO.
If you are going to change the up-pipe then consider porting the headers, PROPERLY at the same time. The O/E up-pipe could also be ported.
The decision to change to an after market up-pipe and its diameter will be influenced by your power aspirations and your current mods and the turbo you are running. Too big a diameter up-pipe for the turbo you are running will result in a loss of spool and power.
I ported a set of headers for Rich Wild and he had an up-pipe to match (after market) and he got a tremendous improvement, best I have done so far.

What are your current and future mods and turbo?

Hi Harvey,

Current mods are:

ScoobyECU
HKS SPF
Turbosmart boost controller (similar to Dawes) @ 15.5psi
Scoobysport full system from turbo back (older H&S version)
standard TD05 (car is MY93WRX)

Made 288 @ Prosport a couple of weeks back.

Short term aims:

reduce lag and improve mid range torque and possibly hit 300bhp (although that might be pushing it a bit on standard slanty i/c, injectors and fuel pump). An acceptable comprimise would be faster spooling and the same power (possibly at lower boost?)

Long term aims:

road-biased (i.e good mid-range torque) 350bhp

The up pipe comes as a deal for some parts I was selling, so no biggie if it's not worth the hassle

Out of interest, how much would you charge to port and wrap my headers if I drove over to you?
