Question

Hi all,

What boost should a standard MY97 produce?
Mine peaks at 8lbs and stays there. That's a little more that 0.5 bar , surely that can't be right?

Cube.

Thumbs up

I had this problem a short while ago on my MY97 WRX, the dump valve was leaking, which caused a noise like somebody blowing over a bottle when the rpm reached 3500 just as the turbo starts to boost. I've also had the boost controller sticking (well it feels like it), the only way I found to clear it while on the move was to get upto 5000 rpm in top gear, sounds odd but it worked. The boost solenoid can be cleaned. Try a search on solenoid cleaning.

Up to about 14PSI/0.9 bar is ballpark for later models. Whatever the MY, 8PSI is too low - around the pressure that the wastegate may open just due the pressure on its spring?

Unhappy

Cheers guys,

So basically, it could be my wastegate, dumpvalve or solenoid at fault.
I did try to clean the solenoid recently, but I'll have another go. I did an ECU reset after as well.
How can I diagnose the wastegate?

I used to have an MY93 WRX which had a simular problem, when boosting it made a high pitched squealing sound and sometimes it would cut boost to 8 psi untill the ecu was reset. I tried bypassing the blow off valve, cleaning the wastegate solenoid running only on super and had it in at several tuning specialists but no one could diagnose it.

I know this isn't much help but it sounds very much the same and i would have loved to know what it was!

Hi Cube

Still got the Cat ???
I am still having problems with my dump valve making that horrible fog horn noise.
I also think it's affecting my boost levels as it feels very intermittent at times.
My Cat is covered under warranty but I am just a lazy **** and not had time to take it to the subaru dealer.

Cheers

Hi GW,

Long time no speak.
Yeah still got the Cat. I've booked it in to have it looked at in a week or so. Do you use a main dealer? I go to Subaru Manchester. I upgraded my DV several months back, so I'm certain that's not at fault.
I'll let you know how I go on.

Cube.

I am also having low boost problem with my MY00 B4 RSK, only hitting 0.5bar. My car has a HKS SQV BOV, ARC intercooler, K&N panel filter and turbo back decat exhaust. Took it to the dealer today, they took a test drive. Half of the time they got full boost of 1.1bar, and half of the time they can only hit 0.5bar. There is also no codes in the ECU. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Low boost issue sorted
Got it back today from C+K. The culprit :- a Bleed Valve, I didn't even know it had one on. The previous muppet who owned it had it fitted in (how can I say this politely) an unconventional manner , which totally mucked up what the wastegate soleniod saw. Offending item now removed, and full boost restored, tho I can't confirm peak and held yet due to rush hour traffic when I picked up.

A happy Cueball
