Question

Having done a few track days I am getting a crunch from 3rd to 4th which is alleviated if I slow the change down. If this is worn synchro ring wouldn't it be same on 5th to 4th which is no problem at all?? I have found several threads and info about 4th to 5th change but this is not problem to me.
If I need to replace synchro ring oin 4th should anything else be renewed in box whilst it is out?
I've always used Silkolene synthetic and changed after track days. Could it be lubricant problem?
If I need this done anyone any idea about how much labour time will be involved?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I was just about to post exactly the same problem on my '98 wagon. Be interested to hear what you find out.

Mine has just started to become noticeable at anything over 3-4000 rpm. I seem to remeber it happened quite often before when giving it a bit, but it's consistent now. Car is completely standard, never tracked. All other gear changes are fine (well, that is to say for this car anyway, never thought much of the gearchange!).

Try GDA sports (near Tunbridge wells), they've had a big of a rung on Gboxes,When I spoke with Graham re same problem on 4th he quoted @ 5 hours labour for clutch change & about £200 for checking & changing the synchro ring on 4th. The other option is they have spares boxes for £450 exchange.
Give them a ring & have a chat, always very helpful & honest.

4th gear syncro is a common failing on MY97/98 UK scoobs and Sti V's

I got the problem with mine (UK MY98) about 9 months ago and luckily because it was still within warranty also got a full gearbox rebuild on IM.

It was a worn syncro ring on mine, but also lead to a worn 4th gear as well which got replaced during the rebuild.

My car ended up with a set of new syncro rings and a new 4th gear.

Common problem on P1's, 4th/5th gear synchros wear and don't allow gear changes above 5000rpm, the cogs are on massive back order with Subaru, so best go through someone else for the parts if you are not doing it under warranty.

Oh Dear...

My '98 STi IV Wagon has just started to graunch between 3rd & 4th. I've just checked my warranty to find it expired last month!

I thought it might have been the track days at first, but having read similar stories for non-tracked cars I'm slightly relieved...but only slightly.

If anyone knows a good gearbox specialist in the West London/Thames Valley i'd be grateful for a response. Maybe we could all club together and get a deal?....

My MY99 STiV has only got 8700 miles on the clock but is really hard to get into 1st sometimes - never been raced. Double clutching usually does the job but not always.

Do you think this is something that will loosen with time now that i'm using the car more than the previous owner or is it something i'm stuck with?

thanks,

bss

Red face

Just a couple of points...

...gear box part availability - got mine within 48hrs of ordering, no backlog, just not held in stock

...the fault on my gearbox (StiV) was the oil spreader attached to the 3rd gear sprocket

...3/4th gearset come as a pre-built unit from Subaru, cost around £220

...the majority of Sti V gear set parts are the same as the normal UK car - not necessarily the same as the P1 - main difference is drop gears and final drive

...master Scooby man is Steve Lawson, specialist gearbox man is Phil at Barrets, especially if you want something a bit non-standard

...5th synchro very common on Type Rs, less so on StiV/P1 - mostly affected by running in - I have heard it go on cars as young as 100miles!

Cheers,

Trout
