Gearbox and Diff Oil Change
#1
Hi all
I was wondering if it is necessary to change the Gearbox and Diff oil on a MY98 with 30K miles? And if so what type of oil is best?
I think I read somewhere that fully synthetic SAE 75W/90 is recommended but Im not 100% sure.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi,
yep 75W/90 is the stuff for the gearbox. Think the rear diff needs 80W/90 but check.
Changed my gearbox oil last night...WOW what
a difference! Feels like a new gearbox. The downshifts from 4->3 and 3->2 are amzingly smooth now.
Mine is a WRX (97) and has done 20kmiles and
I think the stuff in there was the original oil.
Oil I used was Shell API GL-5 75W/90 but loads of people here recommend Castrol syntrax (i think).
cheers,
Matt.

Hi Muddy
Its a pretty straightforward job.
First drive the car for a few miles to warm up the oil. U will then need to get underneath the car and unscrew the gearbox drain plug and have some sort of container to catch the waste oil. After the oil has drained out, clean the drain plug and replace it, but dont overtighten it.
Now you are ready to put in the new oil. Make sure its SAE 75W/90 and you will need about 4 litres for the gearbox.
It is filled through the gearbox dipstick hole. This is loctaed just underneath the intercooler. Remove the dipstick and using some sort of funnel, etc. add the new oil.
Be careful not to overfill as this is not good for the gearbox seals.
Fill it up until you reach the upper level mark on the dipstick.

Gavins` explanation is fine, but just to add - The dipstick reading is very "level" sensitive, so only check when the car is dead level. Also, I recommend Castrol "Syntrax" (available from Halfords) I tried fully synthetic 75/90 but it allowed crunching from 4th to 5th at high speeds (too slippy!) the Syntrax cured this.

Gavin and John,
Thanks very much for your words of wisdom, what will I do without trusty old scoobynet.
I'll have to wait for a dry day to do this, so it could be next year!!!!!!!
Thanks again.
