Question Shock at size of new oil filters from Subaru!!!

I just picked up a new oil filter for my scoob from my local dealers, and was quite shocked to see the size of it has almost halved!!!
I did question about it, and the parts man said that they are all like it now-same one throught the boxer range-turbo and N/A.

Anyone have any views on this.

Don't worry, they do work!
It does concern you when you think this pretty well coincided with the revision to servicing periods of 10k (smaller item doing more work!) Although, if like me, most people on here change them rather more frequently than that.

Maybe they have caught on to the theory re big end failure that highlights the need to ensure the filter is full and car cranked without firing b4 starting ... smaller takes less time to fill.

As a thought.

The seal is a much better system now which is, i my view, very re-assuring.

May be, but how many years have they had to correct that if it was/is the problem?
Probably due to some environmental disposal/recycling issues.....(though maybe a bit worrying if filter area is drastically reduced)

The change to 10K service intervals came in with the 2001 model year John, while the change to the smaller filter came in with (and seemed to be prompted by) the equal length manifold in the 2003 model year cars.

Bob's point is salient, but I suspect this is a happy accident rather than intention.

As far as the longer service intervals are concerned, it does follow that the greater the area in the filter, the longer it'll take to saturate, but on an engine in good condition this shouldn't be an issue. Certainly shouldn't if you're changing the oil as often as you should do.

Yes, you're right about the intro. of the 10k service period. I was too intent on emphasising the tiny filter/extended service period issue.
