Unhappy Urgent help needed, lound banging from engine

help!!

I was driving back home last night and stopped at the lights and could hear what sounded like a loud banging. Drove the rest of the 2 miles home very slowly!

this morning i've been under the bonnet and the noise is coming from the middle pully, it seems to be vibrating but it seems tight. The banging is like a thud thud thud. There does not seem to be any powerloss.

Anyone got any idea's, my garage is 20miles away, will it be ok to drive it there slowly, what could be wrong????????????
the car is a MY93 WRX

Middle pulley as in on the crankshaft? Does frequency of banging increase with rpm?

I've never had this on a scoob, but twice encountered/owned a car with banging noises like you describe, and it was big end bearing failure. In the case of the pug 405 I owned, the crank and conrods were also bent at time of bearing failure. If you ignored the noise, car seemed to be running OK - I heard it fail accelerating hard up a hill at ~70mph, and it carried on accelerating for a couple of seconds before I realised it was definitely me making that noise. Someone else described it as sounding like someone sitting under the bonnet hitting the engine with a big hammer. Took it to a dealer, the guy diagnosed it instantly and gave me about 10 miles tops before the car died completely. I didn't chance it and got it trailered away for rebuild (under warranty, fortunately for me)

Sincerely hope it isn't that in your case, but that's the best idea I have got.

A new/second hand short engine is all you'd need. This is a fully built-up block with crank, rods and pistons in-place. There will be quite a few around at the moment as people are upgrading to US 2.5l units. If you get an STi block you'll get better pistons if you're interested in tuning.

Here's one for sale at the moment:

BlackWrxScooby: commiserations, mate - my engine blew last week too. For a rebuild, I've been quoted between £1800 (Thames Valley motorsport) and £4000 (TSL). Will post more details once I've bagged my new engine - hope you understand.
