Engine malfunction

Me and my friend we where driving last night on his Impreza GT and we fond a strange smell coming from the Engine we stopped and check it out and there came smoke from under the down pipe and the turbine and beneath the down pipe there whose some sort of fluid we do not know it was not oil I think ???
can some one help
