Very interesting, you should use your clutch when changing gears.
No, seriously - second and fifth gears are the know common problems with Subaru gear boxes.
They snap teeth on second gear and flatten teeth in fifth gear.
What model car is it? Turbo/non turbo, clutch type Hydraulic/Cable.

Its an MY01 WRX i.e Turbo. No idea what the clutch is mind, but Im sure either yourself, or somebody else reading this will now know anyway.
I can live with it until the 7.5k service, which will come up in the next month.

If you're lucky it's just a nut in the gearbox that comes loose (common problem) - get your dealer to check and re-tighten. If it's not this then it could be the syncromesh but it sounds unlikely at 6000 miles....

Nope, only crunches into 5th. Just about any revs, but the higher they are, the more crunch you get. All other gears are fine.
I'll live with it until the next service. I just am now very careful on 4th to 5th changes.

Turbo = Hydraulic clutch.
And the problem only exists in fifth gear? What sort of revs are you pulling when this occurs.
Is it also difficult to get into reverse?
It sounds like they will have to replace the gearbox, the selector fork may be bent.
