I bought the car, 97 WRX, in October last year and it was missing its heat shield for the turbo. So ever since I have been paranoid about the heat given off near all the gubbins in that area, so much so that I have now got a heat shield fitted.
But it wasn't as easy as I hoped. The reason the car was missing it in the first place was due to the downpipe change that has the extra piece/width over the standard version. So after a little work with the angle grinder its back on!!!!

Cant believe how hot the intercooler was getting at that side!!

Can anyone tell me what turbo this is/should be? I think its had a conversion in japland before getting to the UK. The wastegate actuator looks different to others I have seen.

As it was

With bracket and penetrating fluid

Modded heat shield

Fitted and complete

97WRX should have been either a VF24 or VF28 originally.

There should be some identification on the compressor cover, the letters IHI should be easily visible.

Just been thinking. Where does the heat go? The shiled may stop some rising, but the heat has to go somewhere, right?

the shield is for protection from radiant heat, all the heat just dissapates through the air
