Cone Filters
#1
Hi guys
This is my first post, had my 2000 Scooby for a week now, drinks are on me.
Many moons ago I used to have a Renault 5 GT Turbo. I put a Pipercross Air Filter on it, and the induction roar was fantastic.
I would like to put one of these on my Scooby, has anyone used these and any problems.
Cheers

Welcome to the mad house!
I had one on my MY 98 (when I acquired it) together with a dump valve and full decat exhaust. Sounded amazing although I don't think the filter had much to do with that.
I never had any problems, but I did remove it after 6 months or so and replaced with std system and ITG panel filter and no noisy d/v. I was told that the cone filter can cause problems with the MAF sensor and therefore engine trouble. I didn't notice any particular loss in power without it.
More technical people will no doubt give you the full story

If you insist on a cone filter, then Piper X needs to be avoided really. The MY99's and MY00 are known for fragile maf sensors. The K&N is widely regarded as a "safe" option. Do a and you will be reading till next christmas on the subject

What model year is it matey ( I'm assuming its a UK, by the '2000' name)
Some models have a film MAF and some a wire - making them more susceptable to oil damage from 'oily' type filters.
The 98 should be OK (I believe), but 99/00's are more at risk.

both K&N and Piper-X are oil based filter though. Even the panel filter is oil based, so hence its a myth that the panel filters wont cause your MAF to be coated with oil.
If you want to be on the safe side, go get yourself an Apexi. Excellent filtering and not oil based !
