Jim,

No is the answer to the first question; and yes to the second - it will make a lot of difference - pulls much harder and faster through the mid range and feels far happier at higher revs. My 99 used to run out of steam a bit at 5500 revs, but it is now quite happy to stay up there. Having said that I was surprised the rolling road improvement wasn't more (see the dyno section - Powerstation).

As a guide, I can stay with my brother-in-laws Evo6 much better now than I ever used to be able to!

Also, sounds soooooooooooo good - real rally car sound.

You won't be disappointed.

Matt

Cheers Matt.

How much extra did you have to cough up insurance-wise ?

Jim, I hope you don't mind me hijacking this thread a little ( it may end up being useful to you anyhow).

I want to fit the SS full system as well. I have the back box on at the moment and the mid sitting in the garage.

What would be the approximate %age power increase ? (insurance company wanna know)

Would temporarily refitting the standard (catted) mid section get you through an MOT?

Do you have to run only on SUL if this is done or can NUL still be used ?

Cheers,

Daz

Dazzler,

%age power increase on mine was 229bhp to 236bhp and 216lb/ft to 227lb/ft - but as I said above feels much more. Check out

A UK car with no cats will fail.

A UK car with DP cat should pass.

A UK car with NO DP cat but with centre cat may *just* pass. (If very warm).

A full SS system is very loud. Listen to one before you do it.

As for power, I can't say. It just feels like the hand brake has been on before. You will also bounce of the rev limiter very easily after as well.

Grin factor is huuuuggggeeeee.

Some people suffer from over boost afterwards though.

P.

PS. Insurance will vary depending on company.

Having the SS full system fitted tomorrow (P1) had the system before on a few of my other scoob’s. So I know what its like, and see I’m going back for more. Not to loud compared with the HKS Hiper but a very nice note indeed. I have informed my insurance (Privilege) who are sending me the paperwork for an increase in power of 10%. No extra charge by the way.
So I have insurance for a slightly modded P1 at £556 must be one of the cheapest there is. Anyone beat it I would be interested.

Question

overboost is bad.. right?
i have a Swona Back Box... ever heard of it?
Made by a guy up in Penicuk, Scotland.
3.5 inch round exhaust. Its got a nice burble to it.

I am getting the PPP fitted to my MY99 (september) turbo at the end of August (when i can change insurance company - Admiral -

i have read that the PPP replaces the mid-section and backbox. And that its quiet.

I am looking for a TVR type sound, (u know what I mean).

But not at the expense of me motor blowing up - and i dont want to fit extra kit to compensate.

SO, bottom line.

Where can I get a SS system fitted (live in Scotland), and if it usually gives overboost with PPP what alternatives are there? Or is the PPP exhaust gonna give a nice rumbling sound that im after?

The reason for not spending extra money, is that I am looking to buy an elise in 2 years time when i sell the scooby - but I want to enjoy the scooby to the max in the meantime.

oh - and should i instead replace the std alloys and brakes?

Cool

Full Scooby Sport (well not really full unless you have the headers like me! )

Sounds great, goes great, storming in and out of Canterbury never tugged by the emissions police who were after bad taxis!

Canterbury and Westminister were the trial areas for exhaust sniffers (Soho it is mandatory )

Had the SS system fitted yesterday. Its is very loud much louder than the last SS system I had. The car is now boosting much higher and picks up much much quicker. In the hot weather the car goes very well but when the weather cool or with rain I have the overboost problem

Thanks Bob,

I gave them a ring, they reckon they are Subaru specialists..well they quoted me a massive £1300 for my UK car as standard, extra with the wheels and exhaust.
Thats about 500 more than most of the quotes I'm getting.

You must live in a very low crime area!
Back to the quote searching again...

Hi Bob,

What's the situation with overboost then?

A bit naïve on what it means, what problems it causes and how you can go about curing it. Can you enlighten me please ?

Bob and Dazler

Overboost is where the boost is increased to a level that causes the ECU to shut the fuel injection down completely.

This is typically at 1.2bar on later cars.

Some people have said that fitting a downpipe will cause this, but we have found this not to be the case, unless there is another pre-existing fault. There have been a few cases where fitting a downpipe caused overboost, but this is generally a result of oil contamination in the wastegate solenoid and manifold pressure sensor, that once cleaned then function perfectly.

The problem didn't manifest it before, because boost was low enough for the sensors to function with a high margin of error.

A simple clean out by a dealer or specialist will sort the problem out.

Could someone, please, explain why is the ScoobySport exhaust called "full system"? Is it because it has all 3 parts from the engine to the tailpipe from the same supplier, or is it because it should bring a noticeable performance improvement when used as a complete package?

I know ScoobySport downpipe is an excellent and widely respected product (just bought it and think it is excellent!). The mid-section is a simple straight piece of a 2.5" diameter pipe which (in case of UK cars) elminates the centre catalytic converter, but that's about it. The backbox is fine if noise is a requirement, but what else does it really do?
Finally, and I am not trying to say it is very important, Japanese and some other more direct, free flow 3" exhaust "systems" flow better and do not go in as many curves and bends around the rear differential, etc. so should not they (at the expense of some noise) be more effective?

I have just bought the SS downpipe and love it to bits, so nothing against Pete Croney's products. Simply curious how much this may be a "mini-cult following" and how much real benefits?

many thanks
Jeremy
