Question

Hi,
Car's just been in for 67.5K service and I mentioned that it doesn't always like going into gear (reverse to 1st) or 3rd to 5th. They said it could be some guide things in the gearbox but to find out they'd have to strip the gearbox down. Cost - £1300! Is this a reasonable cost to strip a gearbox and would I be better off buying a reconditioned STi jobbie ?

The problem can be driven around so isn't a major issue, just for future reference !

cheers
Andy

Ouch! Sounds a bit steep!

Harrymattson's tip (he has gone through all this with his Celica GT4) is to get in touch with someone who rallies Scoobies, as they will rebuild gearboxes on a regular basis.

TSL perhaps?????

I had a noisy box a couple of years ago and it needed a clutch as well so had the lot done and it cost £800 - clutch at 24hr clutches bolton (had a few problems since and another replaced under 2 yr warranty) and bearings etc done at tameside transmisions, took a week but no box probs since.

Thanks people. If I was going 2nd hand, it'd certainly be an STi one. The problem is that I have to take the risk of it not being under warrenty if they takr it apart and it's wear and tear items (which is fair enough). I think I'll wait until it explodes !

Cheers

That's ridiculous. You can get a second hand box for circa £500, depending on type, £600~700 for an STi box.

It sounds like the syncros may be worn, and they're pretty cheap to replace. Even with the cost of labour, £1300 is flippin expensive, unless you've wrecked the gears too,

Mark.
