Gbox ratio's I wanna know.

Can anyone tell me (in muppet language, so i can understand). How to interpret gearbox ratios. Nearly all the mfr's put them in their shiny car brochures but I don't have a clue what they actually mean. I suppose I will need a math degree to understand it but give it a go anyway.
