nasty halt at 130 + resulting in no3 piston and bore damage, crank scorching and valve snapping does anyone know the whereabouts of an engine or can anybody advise of someone who would tackle a rebuild

Hi Tim
Sorry to hear about the damage - you must be gutted...
My mate's 5 did exactly the same, he had the engine rebuild done by David Hendry. Personally i'd rebuild rather than buy, as their obviously prone to this type of failure so you don't know what you're getting if you buy another.
How many miles had the motor done?
Russ (Worried Sti5 owner!)

bad news m8 - condolences....
my STi 4 let go as well - the dreaded big-end failure.
I'd agree - rebuild rather than buy a scrapper.
It'll almost definitely be more expensive, but it should be worth it in the long run.
I'd recommend Roger Clark Motorsport on 01455 828610.
Funny though -before you buy an Impreza, you believe in the whole JD Power / Subarus are reliable thing......
Mine has been the least reliable car I've ever had.

Lots of STI5s going bang at the moment so you'll find it really difficult to find a second hand engine for a start. Consequently they aren't cheap and it will cost less (maybe £1,000+ less) to fix the damaged item. Make sure you get a solid recommendation on an engine builder. Lots of promises, but very few results out in Scoobyland in my experience.
Having a rebuild also eliminates any concern that you might have about being uncertain as to the history of your engine. Many STI5 engines will have suffered detonation at some point. Not every owner is as knowledgeable as your typical Scoobynet person.

I am having my engine rebuilt at the moment by Midland Impreza (after big and bearing failure). I pick it up on wednesday but can't comment on their engine work till I get it back and run it in.

Midland are based in Nuneaton. One of the most helpful people in the Subaru world. Can't comment on quality of work though. There is a website so try the obvious and don't give up 'til you find it.

Just got my car back from Midland Impreza. Seems to run sweet but obviously I have to run it in for 1000 miles. I had no bore/piston/valve damage and it cost including new clutch £1340. As I understand it rebuilds can cost from around £1000 to about £3000 if turbo flies back into engine. They seem to take alot of pride in their work at Midland Impreza and the main chap (Graham) has done alot of work on group N impreza's before starting his own business a year and a half ago. He even told me he had thrown in some platinum spark plugs for free to help ease the pain of signing the cheque! They seem to be the best value engine rebuilders around, and rest assured scoobynet will be the first to know if the engine goes bang again.

Fortunatley it was'nt my own beloved sti 5 ra as seen at Oulton & Croft
but my old one that i sold to one of my customers.
And today thanks to David at API in Warwickshire a new engine will be getting fitted its taken me 3 weeks to track one down as after listening to various comments a re build was not going to be the best way forward, and finding a second hand was impossible.
But panic yee not sti owners the only or main reason these engines let go is failure to follow the usual guidlines i.e( putting good oil in ,servicing regularly, using high octone fuel, and letting the engine warm up and cool down before and after a blast) if you follow these steps they should last forever.
Hopefully the car will be back on the road by Monday but my customer might have a hard time keeping under 3000 rpm for 1000 miles
should anyone need an engine please mail me and i will see what i can do
