Why is my Exhaust sometimes louder than other times?

Confusing eh?

I have Scoobysport Downpipe (Heat lagged) with HKS Hiper Centre and Backbox.

I get in the car, do a journey, exaust note is quiet and not too intrusive.

I park up, let the car cool for a bit, turn it off, go do whatever.

Get back in car, start up and the exhaust is noticably louder and more intrusive.

This is completely random, sometimes it stays quiet for a few journeys, sometimes it is loud from the off and gets queter on a subsequent journey

Any ideas as to why this may be? Atmospheric conditions perhaps

James.

My car, with just the backbox, is notably "different" after 50-odd motorway miles. The noise is fruitier.

And the wife notices too...

Mine was distinctly quieter after I had completed 30 or so rather rapid laps of Bedford Autodrome.....which pi55ed me off somewhat. Still, got rid of it a week after, however the MY01 with SS exhaust is even quieter!! Have a cunning plan to rectify this, but cannot reveal what yet

It could be the moisture in the packing dries out after a long journey when the exhaust heats right up....

I think Pete Croney once mentioned that moisture in the exhaust dampens the noise, so it should be louder at the end of a journey than the start.

I would also imagine the heat would change the shape/size of the exhaust, if only a tiny bit.

Hi folks,
Whilst at Croft the other week I was lucky enough to experience a ride in a car that had the link ecu fitted. The owner of the car said that because the ecu had been mapped for his particular engine set-up not only did it give more power but better mpg .He also mentioned that as the car wasn't running as rich (as the std. ecu) it made the car noticeably quiter. Perhaps this is why sometimes the exhaust sometimes sounds louder than at other times , it's then that the engines running rich .

The last time I went to Castle Coombe my mate was just over the sound limit. He took the car for a short blast, came back and passed.
