I have a 99MY turbo, the only performance mod is a full de-cat exhaust system.The car is detonating severely above 4000rpm in 4th & 5th gear with anything more than half throttle.I had a new short block fitted, number 2 piston had failed (rings & bits of piston in sump).The car was fine when I got it back, after a few hundred gentle miles,I took it over 4000rpm & it's blown another piston.
I only run Esso SUL & the Subaru select monitor shows no fault codes and all specs. for timing/knock retardation etc. are spot on.I'm wondering if its got low fuel pressure or a faulty injector...what do you's recon???

I took my Completely standard UK MY00 to the recent rolling road day at Power Engineering and was told that my car is starting to det around 6400 RPM.

I have to say that I drive like a girl and never never take my car above 6000 RPM but I would still love to know what is causing it. I always run my car on SUL and the guy at Power Engineering said he had never seen a UK car do that before.

How do u know when the car does that?

What about low revs?
does all ur cars sound really bad if ur in 4th at 1,500 rpm?

Chances are you won't hear it until its too late (particularly with an aftermarket exhaust on....)

1500rpm is exactly 30mph so I spend a lot of time in that situation - what's the question?

Best remedy is a KnockLink....

HI DAVE , I THOUGHT I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I RANG THE NORMAL PLACES ALL SAID THE SAME ITS DETO BOOK IT IN WE WILL HAVE A LOOK.IHAVE HAD TWO TUNES OK FOR DAY OR TWO THEN BACK TO NORMAL. IHAVE HAD NEW SPARKS AND FILTER, OIL ETC.I READ MY SUBARU OWNERS MANUAL FOR DAY AND SOLVED THE PROBLEM MYSELF.. ALL IT WAS THAT I HAD 98%COOLANT IN IT I REMOVED IT ALL AND FILLED IT WITH SOFT WATER UNPLUGGED THE BATTERY HEY PRESTO ITS MENTAL NOW . I CANT PROMESS IT WILL HAPPEN TO YOU BUT ITS WORTH LOOKING INTO PS. DO PUT SOME ANTI FREEZE IN THE WINTER .

You MUST run antifreeze all year round in an Impreza engine or else you will get internal corrosion with plain water.
