Question

Anyone know if the STi-RA (classic) has shorter ratios than the type-r?
Please post if you know, not just guessing!

Cheers

Just had a quick look through some brochures.
The ratios would appear to differ between MY's but not between models of the same MY.
Do you have a particular model in mind?

I'm looking at version 3 Sti's. So late 96 into 97 would be the year.

From what I can decipher (the brochures are in Japanese) the ratios are as follows for the MY96:

WRX
1st – 3.166
2nd – 1.882
3rd – 1.296
4th – 0.972
5th – 0.738
final – 4.444

WRX type RA
1st – 3.083
2nd – 2.062
3rd – 1.545
4th – 1.151
5th – 0.825
final – 4.444

Both of these are non-Sti’s and it appears that the RA has shorter gears than the WRX (which I think is fairly widely accepted fact anyway).

Referring to a Version IV (MY97?) brochure the ratios are as follows:

WRX
WRX STi Version IV
WRX STi Version IV (wagon)
1st – 3.166
2nd – 1.882
3rd – 1.296
4th – 0.972
5th – 0.738
final – 4.444

WRX type RA
WRX type RA STi Ver IV
WRX type R STi Ver IV
1st – 3.083
2nd – 2.062
3rd – 1.545
4th – 1.151
5th – 0.825
final – 4.444

They’re all the same as the MY96 ones, so it looks like the RA and the Type R have the same ratios.
I’m sure someone will flame me if I’m wrong

PS Whichever you go for – I’m sure you won’t be disappointed – DO IT!

Thumbs up

This is the 'ultra short' gearing on the V2 Ra and I suspect it was also used on V3.
This is the shortest geared Impreza. Yes - it runs 3.9 diffs !
I have had 3 of these boxes now and have actually counted the number of teeth on 2 of them, just to be sure !

Final - 3.9

1 - 3.454
2 - 2.333
3 - 1.75
4 - 1.355
5 - 0.972
