Paranoia about abnormal sound

Hope I've got the right forum.
Car is MY02 WRX with 11,500 miles. Between 2-3k revs there is a low humming sound (I can only liken it to someone blowing over the top of a milk bottle
) Wasn't there previously. Happens in most gears and continues when clutch dipped.
Any ideas? I might be totally paranoid, or it might be summat real simple, but it's bugging me....

The early cars used to have a problem with the dump valve iirc which sounds like someone blowing over a bottle but thought it was sorted on the newer cars..
