tapping noise nr airbox?

Hi all, could someone please help? its a shiny brass coloured thing(solenoid?) behind airbox mounted to the suspension bulkhead.There is a no onthe part it is 716102AA190/ denso/136200-0760.There are 3 pipes coming of it, 1 to the actuator the other 2 go to the top nr the coil.When i rev the engine and keep it above tickover it rattles.I thought it was my tappets at 1st.Wot is it ? wot does it do? how much to fix?? The car is a 98WRXimport be very grateful for any help please,cheers clive

Clive, its the wastegate solenoid! Common for them to tick.

Read the faq on the SIDC website. this will tell you how to stop it ticking (for about a week)

cheers dan,very helpful,do i just order another or does it matter that it is a import wrx?

Try cleaning it and mounting it on new rubber bushes or something... you want to reduce the vibration transfered to the car body.

Clive, you could try cleaning it first, that might work. If not I think they are the same on sti/wrx/uk. Just make sure you get the one for your year car.

No need to do anything, if its making a ticking noise then its working just great, thats what it does under normal circumstances.

Clive, put some brake cleaner in the pipework. Then go for a quick blast. Again read the faq on the sidc website, this gives better details.

As Bob states, it ticks as normal, but should not be a loud tick.
