Polishing/grinding crank: Any gotchas?
#1
Dissassembled my engine as it had done 2 and 3 big ends, but upon micing it up it seemed to be well within tolerance so I left it with my local machine shop to be polished. It looks like a relatively straightforward job. Is there any required insider knowledge or is it just like any other crank?

The problem can be getting rid of swarf from the oil drillings, as they don't have removable plugs (peened in ball bearings instead). They can be spark eroded out to make sure.
However I don't believe it need be a problem, possibly block the oilways before grinding with some sort of removable plug, or melt some wax into it, I don't know?
Also if the grinding is done with lots of liquid, it should minimum what can't be cleaned out with lots of carb cleaner.
I would ask the company doing the crank.

As I understand it he will perform a grinding op but use a buffer shoe instead of a grinding wheel. In his words it shoud remove any high spots without removing any material as such. Im not 100% sure if its necessary but there were faintly visible score marks on the crank pins.
He machines cranks all the time but has never done an impreza crank, thats why I wondered if there was anything to pay specific attention to.
Cheers Muchly!
