Darren,

Where exactly does the sound come from? Is it underneath you, behind you or definately in the engine bay? On second thoughts it could be the turbo as you were well on boost.

Darren,

Yeah, my old MY96 (remember the skoda interior) turbo used to whine it's **** off at high revs in high gear, but that car had done 112,000 miles ffs! When did you check the oil last? Is it due an oil change.

Keep an eye out for me in my S reg Green turbo now with big spoiler on the back! Saw you parked in New Lane again a couple of fridays ago, opposite Wyeth's

Karlos,i changed the oil 3 weeks ago (mobil 1 motorsport) i dont get any smoke when i boot it so im sure it cant be the turbo as it was fine in all other gears ill just take it easier from now on not that i boot it much anyway

Daren,

Hey! Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree. Let's wait and see if anyone else comes back with any other suggestions.

Cheers,

Things to consider? - Air-con pump, steering pump, alternator ( do you realise the revs the alternator is doing at 6k engine speed?) water pump, cam belt etc.
You say 6000 in 4th (naughty, naughty) what about 6000 in 2nd or 3rd? i.e. definately engine related and not speed? It could be the way 4th gear loads the bearings in the g/box

cheers for the pointers John,it only whined in 4th but on closer inspection this afternoon i found that the gearbox oil wasnt registering on the dipstick so i think that may contribute to the noise.Any recomendations on gearbox oil?
cheers

Hope the lack of oil hasn`t F***ed the g/box bearings! The thing is, where did the oil go? You havn`t got a slipping or juddery clutch have you? I have tried fully synthetic 75w/90 but the synchro can be beaten at high(ish)revs when changing from 4th to 5th I would suggest Castrol Syntrax - recommended for Jap gearboxes, usually available at Halfords. I would also suggest you do a complete g/box oil change - its easy! ( see how much ferrous swarf is stuck to the magnetic drain plug) You will need 3.5 ltrs.

The g/box drain plug is in the centre of the g/box and can be removed without disturbing the undertray, its quite easy to see. The car will need to be level to ensure all oil is drained (if I put the car on ramps in my sloping drive it finishes up level!) The box is re-filled through the dipstick hole!(its a large diameter) You will need a length of tube from the oil container to the hole, about 300m.m. will do. Warm the oil first by standing in a saucpan of hot water,
it makes the job a lot easier.
Good luck! - JohnD

Darren. Check your power steering fluid level. I had the exact symptom you do and it turned out my power sterring fluid was a little low.
