Low speed misfire after biggie service...

Hi,
Just had a major service (90K - eeekk!) and all was hunky dory. Except that after I drove off I noticed that there was a low speed (like between 1K and 2K revs) misfire. Damned annoying around twon and slow corners.
Anyhow, took it back today and Subaru plugged it into their pooter and did a road test. Nothing wrong that they can see. BUT the service manager did allude to the coil pack mountings (at least I believe it's the mountings - rubber bits around the coil packs anyway!) maybe having being disturbed are playing up.
Question is, what do you guys think?
Secondly, how easy to replace yourself?
Cheers
Dave

Very similar problem on a 36000mile WRX. Blat down the motorway, no problem, but as you come up the slip road the engine just doesn’t want to know with a very slight throttle. Put your foot further down and the suddenly it takes off again. Had it's brain down loaded (In GERMANY (IMG To##ers)) and they found nothing....HELP
I seem to get the same thing on my car, it started around the same time as my wastegate solenoid played up the first time due to too much oil. Have cleaned the solenoid a number of times but it is still not perfect / as it was before. Coil packs and plugs have not been tampered with in any way - could it still be them or am I just not cleaning the solenoid properly ? (can't locate the green wires MY95 WRX).
Pete - if it is coil packs do you sell them - how much etc ?
Thanks
Ken

Dave I would imagine that one or more coil packs have failed. This is common after a high miler has a plug change, which you would have had done in a 90k service.
I don't know why this happens and your dealer are not at fault.

Have also had this problem - 2-3krpm very light throttle only, particularly when hot after a decent run.
Symptoms exactly the same as Marcus.
Started just before a service - plugs got checked at service (all OK). Still does it, but only intermittently.
Car is a 98 STi v4 with 40k miles. - single coil pack on top of manifold.
Really appreciate any help!
haven't yet had the car checked out on selectmonitor.

Pete - it's OK, I never thought it was the dealers fault. Just want to get away with the least cost option....

Spoken to another dealer about is and he just about confirmed what the servicing dealer said. He explained the symptoms I would get if the coil pack bungs (or wotever they're called!) were not doing their stuff. Exactly what I have. So, first option is to replace the bungs - about £6 + vat. They're rubber so they go hard, crack etc at high mileage. The servicing dealer said they had checked but that they had looked fine. But you know what high voltage to spark plugs is like. It likes all the insulation in tip-top condition or it gets out... result, lack of or weak sparkys...
Anyhow, accelerating from low rpms shows up the problem. It also sometimes misfires at idle. Exactly the symptoms that were described to me. The MY96 like mine has 4 seperate coil packs. Later ones have a single one so am not sure if the same thing can happen.
Anyhow, rubber bungs £6 each. Coil packs about £50 each (plus the vat I think).
Rubber first....
I'll post to let you know if it works.

plan to check resistance of leads and coils sometime soon.....not got round to it yet....
Pete - does the coilpack problem also affect the single coilpack on later cars?

had the same prob, turned out to be a split in the coil pack rubber that gose onto the plug, the mech who put it on after service split it. so i pulled that one out first as it was the most easy to get to and glued it with super glue and put some insualtion tape round it and all is fine . Will get new coil packs before my unichip gose in at power station
My my95 (120k on the clock!) had a similar problem when I got it a couple of months ago, and the car was a pain in the butt around town. I always used to use Tesco petrol in my old car (to get vouchers, etc), and used the same when I first got the Scooby. I have since changed to Esso and the problem has almost completely vanished!!

News. Bought new rubbers that go on the end of the coil pack and thatfit over the spark plug. [If anyone doesn't know what they look like take a look at the plug caps they sell in bike shops/Halfors. They have a rubber boot on the end opposite to the plug end that also slips over the HT lead. The Impreza one is bigger version of this. That'll be 28 quids sir.... eeek!].
Managed to replace 3 today (I need to move the washer bottle to get at the last one and cound't be arsed...) and the low speed misfir has gone. BUT what I also found was that the ends of the coil pack that the rubber slips on to (oohhh eerr missus...) were cracked in 2 out of 3. Did the quick option and wrapped some insulation tape around them before I put the rubber on. Seems fine now.
But at 50 squid a shot for the coil packs I may well check a breakers out first.... when they actually stop working that is!
Cheers
Dave
