Gearbox problems

Firstly, apologies to those who subscribe to IWOC for the double posting.
Anyway, after my STi II RA spent 4 months off the road during an engine rebuild, during road testing a problem emerged with the gearbox.
The symptoms are excessive movement on the front driveshafts, both laterally and vertically. Locking of the front wheels when on steering full lock (whether or not central diff is open or partially closed), accompanied by a noise from the gearbox. Presumably these problems existed prior to the rebuild, its just that I have only noticed them now.
Any ideas what the problem is? More importantly, who can fix it (west yorkshire area pref). The box has already been stripped down once to fit a new 5th gear, but I think this could be a diff problem.
