Lightbulb

Dont use NUL without some octane boosting addative. Millers gets a good review on the bbs. Although a bit controversial add some Broquets.

Jamie,

Under what circumstances did it let go, and what mod's have been done.

It's hard to tell from the pic's how much of the damage could be due to det', and how much is due to bits of piston bouncing between the crown, and heads. It does look as if it took a little time before you realised what was happening.

It's pretty rare for the pistons to go, it's mainly either no.3, or 4 big ends.

IMO it looks like it could be fuel starvation, which also seems to hit no's 1, and 2 first.

Mark.

Don't use NUL fullstop in an STi. Not even with Octane Booster.
