Question

I have carried out the wastegate soleniod self test today.
Removed all pipes and cleaned with brake cleaner, squirted brake cleaner in soleniod, connected green plugs and switched on ignition. Connected back up, and went for a spin, unfortunately it's still overboosting.

I know that may be some different restrictors can be fitted but with a cost of losing some boost (which I don't really want to do). If this is the only resort where can I get these restrictors from (MY93 WRX import) and how dod I know what size to use.

Any more help would be appreciated, as I don't want to take it to a garage just yet, cause I cannot aford the money at the moment.

thanks in advance.

You also need to get the actuator checked.
This can be done by getting a pressure/vacuum generator and pumping it up. Pressure should build to about .7bar and then the actuator piston should go loose.
If no pressure builds the diaphram is holed (as mine was)

Thumbs up

Check all your vacuum lines. There should two smaller ones which run from intercooler inlet (this has a brass restrictor in it) into a T-piece, then the other small hose will run from T-piece to actuator.
The other hoses to check are bigger in diameter and should run from T-piece to Boost Solenoid, then from the Boost Solenoid to airbox outlet into Turbo (after MAF).
Check all hoses for splits, cracks and abrasions. Failing that then clear out all of your hoses (small hoses including brass restrictor & bigger hoses) and Boost Solenoid with brake cleaner sold at Halfords.
For more info on this do a search on Drivetrain under Boost Solenoid.

Hope this helps...Jacko.

Jacko

Thanks but I already checked all hoses etc.

Nigel

Thanks I originally thought that it may be the actuator.
I take it that you suffered from over boost and changing the actuator cured it.

I don't have access to a pressure/vacuum so before I investigate this, is there any other possible causes, i.e will a knackered dump valve cause this!!!

Thanks again for all your help.

I had an overboost problem for a couple of months. It could be cured for a few of days by use of brake cleaner as you mention. Trouble was after a couple of days the problem would come back. If your oil level is too high the solenoid etc will get contaminated again, make sure the oil level is about half way between the two holes on the dipstick. This worked on my car, MY95, hope it works on yours.

Andrew,

Cheers M8, oil level is fine, there did not seem to be any oil contamination in pipes thus when cleaned out (solenoid and pipes) there was no change.

Thats why I suspect something else has knackered.

Thanks

Muddy.
