Question

Hi folks,

I have just picked my car with a replacement Gearbox to sort the knackered one and a Helix sports clutch amongst other things, but I have a problem/question...

Previously, my 94WRX was doing 80@4000rpm.

Now she is doing 60@3500, 70@4000 and 80@4600rpm

I am not even going to say what she does at the magic 3 figures......

I have a sneaking suspicion of what box has been fitted, but would appreciate your guy's input.
It's more of a buzzbox than my 106GTI!

Cheers,

Nick

Sounds like an RA box.

Exclamation

From what I have read the RA seems to be the most likely as Alex says - has the shortest gearing of the Scoob boxes

Thanks guys. That's exactly what I thought. Don't think that I can cope with a fifth gear that is as short as that. What do you guys think?
Worth keeping or would you want the normal one. I want the normal one personally, but would appreciate reasons one way or another.

Cheers,

Nick

Wow, thats almost 1200rpm more at 80 than a MY96 in 5th with SS DP. Glug glug glug. Hope you got shares in esso or whichever brand you use.

I would rather have the correct box back in. But if you've lived with 4thou at 80, what's 600rpm between friends! Down to personal preferance I think. Can you live with it?

No. Took her out again today and it really is unbearable.102-105@6000rpm. Really does sound like i am killing her. did the 90 mile trip back from the garage yesterday at mostly 70 yesterday, she felt that odd/strained. 1st and 2nd really dont seem much different at all. Within 2 mins of leaving my house I am on dual carriageway, so seems like a bad idea.... Cheers folks

Hi,
I'm running an MY00 WRX RA V6 Ltd and love the box and mental acceleration (i guess its just down to personal preference!), but your figure @6000rpm is a lot lower than mine.

If the box that has just been installed has different ratios than the origanal then DONT drive her any more!
This being that the box AND rear diff must be the same ratios.
Your front drive shafts connect to the front box which contains the diff for the front end.The rear drive shafts connect to the rear diff.
If the ratios (final drive ratio)are different then your front wheels will be turning at a different speed tan the rear!Major diff problems ahead!
I swapped the box and rear diff of my 94RA with that of uk spec.Couldnt stand the screaming at 80mph.Now 4000rpm = 96mph.If you would like any more details (and the phone number of a breakers with a very low mileage UK box and rear diff for around £500) then mail me and ill give you my number.

Forgot to add,if you look at the data badge on the NS inner wing you will find the transmission type number. This (if the box is same as the origanal)should match the small long white sticker located on the NS of the gearbox bellhousing
