New exhaust causing overboost?
#1
Steve,
I get this problem every 9-12 months. So fed up with taking the car back to have cleaning restrictor adjustments done, i've decided now to do the cleaning myself and so far haven't needed to take the car to the garage. Suggesting that the dealers "easy" fix is to just throttle the boost back with the use of restrictors without properly cleaning the system.(i've complained of reduced power on a couple of occasions after this procedure).
Have you properly cleaned the wastegate solenoid ? ie remove pipes, fill with brake cleaner, then connect the two green plugs in drivers side footwell the start cycle?
I'm sure if you reduce the hole in the restrictor you reduce the boost.
Sounds to me like a bit more cleaning is needed. Let me know if you need a bit more detail.
Steve.

I've got a 94 WRX.
Just put on a ScoobySport exhaust, and it appears to be overboosting. I've checked and cleaned sensors/breather pipes etc.
Apparently there's a brass restricter in the pipe that feeds the manifold pressure to the overboost sensor. It has been suggested that I make the hole smaller.
Will this mean I'm running higher boost? Will this damage my engine? Or will it just give the wastegate more time to open?

What does the wastegate solenoid look like
I don't know what the difference between the boost and wastgate soleniods on the strut wall are.
Anybody got any piccies.
I've got overboost and wish to try and rectify myself instead of paying a garage loads of money!!!!!.
I take it that cleaning is only a temporary fix!!. What would be a permanent fix? A new wastgate solenoid?
Thanks.

The Wastegate solenoid sits on the drivers side strut pillar just behind the air cleaner. It is a cylinder of around 1" diam by around 2 to 3" long. Have a look at this pic(hope it's o.k to use) The Wastegate is the shiny gold device behind the induction filter.

Thanks for that, looked at the pic and although the wastegate solenoid on the pic looks nothing like I have, I think I now know where it is on mine. From memory mine looks similar to the pic, I can remember mine having a clear plastic end thingy like the pic. I will investigate further tommorrow, and perhaps weather pending clean it all out.
Thanks again.
