2.2L Stroker Kit - BPM, Any Good?
#1
Hi all,
I happened to chanced upon the BPM web site and saw that they have
the 2.2 stroker kit. I am currently running a VF22 Turbo with the
Apexi Power FC with AVC-R. Will this kit yield more power and how
effective it is? Has anyone tried this kit from BPM? Other than
BPM, are there any other makers of this kit in Aus or UK?
I have e-mailed to BPM and yet to received a reply from them. Anyone
knows whats the indicative prices excluding GST?

Dunno about the price.
Jun do a stroker but it's around double the price of the BPM one.
Can't confirm figures as it's not mapped yet, but it's certainly a fair bit torquier than it was before.
Will be able to comment more when the ECU is done.

The BPM Stroker Kit is a true 2.2 litre capacity with a great deal of R and
D done to ensure exact compression ratio is attained.
An engine has a bore (piston diameter) and a stroke (length of piston/rod travel).
The stock stroke on WRX 93-01 is 75mm.. The BPM stroker crank takes this stroke even further to 82.5 mm, adding 200 cc to engine capacity.
From the BPM stroker kit alone, you will see a significant increase in
torque and a moderate horsepower increase.
Horsepower can vary greatly depending on what cylinder head work has been
performed and whether or not headers and exhaust are being used.
The rods we manufacture were designed for the simple fact that other rods
were bending in very high HP applications.
Pistons 92.5mm Rings Pins [HPC coated tops and skirts]
Headgasket kit
BPM Billet Conrods and bearings
Main Bearings and Big End Bearings
Crankshaft Balanced, treated and stroked from 79mm stroke to a 82.5mm stroke
BPM 2.2 Stroker Kit = (92/2)x(92/2) x pi = 0.0266 0.0266 x 82.5 =2.2 litre

hi greg
ok since you are here i would like to ask few questions regarding your kit but you will have to excuse my lack of knowledge.
are these pistons forged ? what is the max boost the can be run on these internals before it goes boom. obviously nothing very specific but some general info like for example my subaru internals don't like to be wound up more than 18-19psi before they start knocking.
also will you get piston slap with it ? i have been told that MOST of aftermarket forged pistons slap due to too much clearance.
and finally how much ?
cheers
ps
i will be grateful if you could have time to answer all the questions especially the money one

Sam,
I can answer the piston slap question.
Yes you will, especially when cold.
I though/heard the internals were good for 35psi. May be wrong.
Mine doesn't feel like it's got much more power at the moment than it did - but the torque is a big improvement over std.
So little lag, even with an unmapped VF22.

I can vouch for Craig car even without the mapping, we both tried some launches against my old WRX with was quick beleive me and there was nothing in it! Im waiting for the Mapping so we can see these 11 second 1/4 mile times
If he lets me launch it

Sam,
To answer your questions , the pistons are forged with a 92.5mm height with the following stats.
We also offer a HPC coating on the pistons for the higher spec kit.

Maximux boost levels can be as much as 40 psi with the kits being utlised in extremely high HP applications. The BPM kit has not suffered any ill effects although a competent map must be established firstly
The "safe" boost levels that can be run are very high up in the range as long as the turbo being used is not running off its compressor map. Quality of fuel plays a factor as does oil breather tank kits, oil cooler kits and so forth. With the correct amount of attention to the other contributing factors , 30psi+ on 700HP Garrets is common practise.
A forged piston will handle higher boost levels obviously but even some after market rods are still prone to bending and warping.
Hence the development of the BPM Conrods.
The "high" boost levels do require a Copper Headgasket of specific thickness, O- ringing and use of head studs and bolts to prevent lifting.
The cost of the kit will soon be re-released for the UK due to a distributor being appointed thus allowing stock to reside in the UK.
Regarding piston slap, which is misunderstood and often frowned upon. With the clearances we recommend ie 4though , the are for high HP applications. They can be reduced but it is better to have slightly greater clearance than play too close to tolerances due to expansions properties of components.
Hope this helps

couple of things i would like explained if possible. please
what is the long time effect of piston slap ? i mean is it just a noise or can it lead to components failure ? also what is the normal clearance for the OE pistons ?
will the standard oe alloy block take 30+psi boost ?
is this kit suitable for an every day use road car ?
cheers

Carlos...
It is Thou... 4 thou... which is quite noisy IMHO - But might be required depending on the metalurgy of the piston.
Greg, what is the distance from the piston crown to the first ring.. that is my concern with such a long stroke.

Just out of Interest for a friend who is looking for a big conversion for his wagon, who is the UK Distribution.....
This sounds like a good conversion....

Craig H,
How is your car running now??
Was it the BPM stroker that you used or the JUN? I would appreciate any comments as I am looking into a stroker kit for my car at the moment.
Cheers

Nick,
Unless Bret has changed the spec' of his stroker kit, it uses the standard crank, which gives 2.1lt, not 2.2lt.
I did ask him to clarify his kit, when he "promoted" it on the WRX list, but he didn't bother to reply !!.
Harj: You're going to great lengths promoting BPM products, when are you going to tell everyone about your vested interest (either now, or pending).
Mark.

V5-APS,
the 22B acieves the greater displacement by using 96.9mm pistons not 92.0mm. You cannot overbore an EJ20 engien to this extent, the piston liner thickness is insufficient to cope, you cannot really take more than 1mm out of it before it gets real dodgy....
This leaves stroking. You could use a 79mm (EJ25) crank, but you will need shorter conrods (otherwise the pistons will pop out of the top of the bores, unless the compression height is reduced, which is a Bad Thing (TM)), but better rods are a good idea. Even then, the oil control ring will cross over the gudgeon pin insertion access holes, which could result in premature wear of the oil control ring...
If you REALLY want to get the 2.2L capacity, then have a look at an EJ22 block, there are "plenty" open deck ones about (you're unlikely to be starting with an EJ20 closed deck anyway). If you must, you can get EJ22T blocks (closed deck) but they would have to be ex-Liberty (Aus block) or you can get an EJ25 block and have it converted to closed deck by Cobb Tuning....
Just a few options
As for the BPM kit, I have no personal experience of it, but I have seen a BPM crank, and to be honest it leaves a lot to be desired. It is a remanufactured EJ25 crank, NOT a billet crank (which IMVHO is the ONLY way to stroke an engine properly)... Of course this may have changed since the sample I saw.
Cheers,
Pat.

As soon as DHL delivered my BPM 2.2L Stroker Kit, I unwrapped all of the parts and took a few pictures including the lovely BPM Venturi Pipe. Please email me at janshim@brunet.bn if you want a copy.
