Not quite - but it got all of you with this problem to open this post up!
I have had this problem when cold since new - 11 months ago.
My dealer has now 'OFFICIALLY' told me that it is a 'feature' of the car and has to be lived with!! - just when we were all, including him!, awaiting the modified ECU to fix it! so, what Subaru is saying is, we cant fix it so we will now call it a feature of the car and hope everyone goes away quitely!

hi
I got my car just over a week ago.. 99MY
and since then I have noticed this hesitation... like its climbing a staircase of acceleration...
i am not sure it totally goes away when warmed up... just less noticable..

Excellent get out clause for you Subaru dealer. I have heard a lot of it lately. No mater what the problem, its a feature of this type of turbo engine. Utter bull****.
Mine use to hesitate very badly hot or cold.

I have given up with my00 and i have got a good price on px of a P1. If you make a lot of noise they will have to do something. I have had a very good deal so every one must keep up the pressure on your dealers.
So far the P1 does not do it like my00 i have been driving between 2500 and 3500 no problems

If it was the ECU and emissions, then the course of action to try would be to get a LINK and map it to be the same as the standard uk one and then try it. Then put the old ECU back in.
The advantage about having a mappable ECU in there is that any bugs can be easily ironed out.
If it shows no sign of the hesitation then push Subaru for a replacement.
My MY00 with PPP does'nt have this hesitation, YET. Maybe I have a Monday morning car

There was already a lot of discussion about this matter in other threads, and someone stated, as he would know for sure (and at this point I believe him), that this is a feature. I combine what he said and what I've investigated.
* Noise pollution tests are done holding rpm at 3200 for 30 sec (2nd gear), then given full throttle.
* ECU activates noise reduction by dropping max turbo pressure to 0.5 if:
* you're on 2nd gear, and hit the pedal to the metal from ~3100-3800rpm
* Subaru cannot legally fix this because of the noise emissions.
--
If all this is true, I think it's not worth complaining, since Subaru just made something for you it couldn't have made without this trick - which of course IS nasty whenever it comes as a surprise. Complain enough about this, and you can be sure that in the future Scoobies will be more compromised... as the MY01 already shows

The question that really needs answering is why do some cars hesitate while others don't?
If its a characteristic of the car they should all do it. If one car does not hesitate then the parts from that car could repair the car that do hesitate.

Hang on though pete,
Surely if the ECU is 'designed' to perform this way then it must be able to tell that you are in second gear......
So that would mean either:
There is a sensor to detect what gear you are in
or
The ECU is calculating your gear from a feed from the tacho.
If *either* of these is true, then why can't we work around it....
For the ECU to do its job, it does not need either of the two inputs, so 'lying' to the ECU sounds possible..
Any thoughts?
(I'll get my coat...)
