HKS F-CON 5
#1
Hi,
I've heard a lot on this BBS about Possum Link, MOTEC, Unichip and even Superchip ECU replacements/"enhancements". However I've not heard a lot about the HKS F-CON 5 unit and a notice that one is for sale. Can anyone enlighten me and answer the following questions?
- Is it a ECU replacement or piggyback unit?
- Is it a fit-and-forget or require constant fettling?
- Is easy to fit!
As I've said before, I'm not after max power; but more low down torque and responsiveness plus a little more top end. I've got a UK MY95 - how tuneable is this motor?
Thanks for any help guys,
Andy

Andy,
i) it is a piggy back unit - the stock ECU is retained for fuctions such as idling while the HKS F-Con takes care of fuel/ignition curve
ii) it can be a fit and forget unit if the the programming is right for your car (highly unlikely) and the mapping can only be altered by someone who has the HKS specific program writing software.
iii) depending on which model F-Con V (there is the F-Con V, F-Con V Pro, F-Con S) i don't think there is a direct plug in harness available.
All in all, I would NOT recommend you getting this unit unless you know of someone in the UK with the HKS program writing software. I live in Hong Kong and I had to fly in a specialist from Japan (JUN) to custom program the HKS F-CON V-Pro on my car.

Guys,
Here's the engine mods of my STI Ver IV:
Greddy TD06-20G L2 Turbo kit including: external wastegate, downpipe, fittings, etc.
Greddy front mount intercooler
JUN 4-2-1 Stainless headers
Nismo 550cc injectors
Nissan Skyline BNR34 fuel pump
Blitz Dual-SBC
5-Zigen 304max 3 inch exhaust
HKS F-CON V-Pro
Prior to the HKS F-Con, I ran a modified stock ECU (by MINES in Japan) with stock injectors, stock fuel pump with the larger turbo upgrade. The driveability was absoluetely horrendous in terms of low end torque etc. The main limitation was retaining the air mass sensor and by using an F-CON, i no longer needed it and tuning could be more versatile. At the same time as installing the F-CON, the 550cc injectors and R34 fuel pump were also installed to cope with my intentions of running high boost (up to 1.4 bar with the TD06-20G). I was very impressed by the difference in low-end power after installing the F-CON, however, this still does NOT equal the low-end of a stock STI.. More importantly, there is a safe A/F ratio of 11.?? (under 12:1) at WOT running up to 1.4 bar of boost (not that I run that boost in regular driving)
In my case it was well worth it, but I don't really think it's worthwhile in your case. I'm praying nothing goes wrong with mine!!
Regards,
Jon

Cool !!
I understood almost most of it but still have to work out what WOT means ( wastegate outlet temp, water outlet temp ??? Sorry if I sound dumb, just picking up the lingo at my own slow pace . (You should see me drive !)
