Strange Noise
#1
A couple of days ago i developed a strange 'whining' noise from the trasmission.
Not sure if its the gearbox or the rear diff. Only noticable at low ish speed (0-25/30 mph), and when going back on the gas after lifting off.
I changed the oil in the gearbox and the diff this morning, but the noise is still there (might be a bit quieter though)
Anybody out there had a similar problem, if so any help would be great.
Failing that does anyone know where I might get it checked out.
Cheers all, James.
p.s. the car is a '92 Legacy Turbo

James,
I have had this since November. I presume it is the gear box as it started only happening in 4th and 5th but it now does it in all gears other than 1st.
I am in no way a transmission techie, but maybe it's worn bearings??
Anyone like to make any suggestions?
Zak.

A friend of mine is going to have a look at it tomorrow. I'll let you know what he thinks.
Thinking back though, this all started after the car got caught on the ramp at the local exhaust centre.
I hope I don't have to replace the gearbox, I read somewhere that a re-build can cost £600

James,
how did you get on with the diagnosis?
I'm going to take mine to ScoobySport to let them have a look. Looks like I may need a rebuild.
