I have a 97 WRX and was wondering what the difference is between the one I have fitted and the STI version? If the STI version is better which one do I need to get hold of?

Thumbs up

they are the same but yours is painted black mate (unless sumbody swapped yours without you knowing)

the uk cars are smaller ad have a diffrent rear edge/end tank

i painted mine black and red for last years show season and its getitng a bit chipped now (due to me getitng in a bad mood when swapping my turbo) i plan to strip all the paint from it and polish it up as natural silver

I don't know why the higher volume MY97/98 IC is always called an STi version as I've seen it in WRXs and I had one in my JDM Forester.
The lower spec IC can be spotted by the cut off corner shown in the piccie below. It reduced the volume of the IC, plus with the plastic Y hose reduces the flow through it.
The fuller volume IC has a square edge on that side.

I had a look at the IC and its black with the larger rear piece. I do however have the platsic Y piece. Should I look at changing this? I suppose we are talking restrictions right?

Autospeed did a big article on subaru intercoolers. To be honest you'd be wasting money trying to get an STi intercooler as the difference is very very marginal. You'd get better results by putting a set of Samco boost hoses on to get rid of that horrible plastic pipe.

Well said- my97 with sti4 i/c, no difference what so ever.
But the y pipe does help. As for internal volume the diff probably about 3%.

How do you intend to polish the IC. I can see how easy it is to polish the outside parts, but all the fins are going to be black. Are you simply going to spray the fins silver?
