Hello all,
A friend of mine with a MY00, has just bought a quickshift for £59 including VAT, from

Bought one of these last year from them for my Legacy. I did not fit it .Left that to Mechanic. Works fine.I f I drive a normal Scoob I think the leaver is going to snap off !!

I've heard that the 'throw' on the MY00 gearbox isn't much shorter than a quickshift.
I'd be very interested in the difference once you've fitted it, perhaps we could meet up so I can see for myself, I'm not too far away.

If it's just the gear lever how does it make the shift quicker?
I've already hacksawed off a fair bit of my old lever, so if it's just shorter it sounds a bit pricey.

The lever only types reduce the amount of movement required to execute the shift by moving the connection to the shift linkage further up the lever (only slightly) thereby increasing the moment arm.

Simple mechanics really.

Stef,
Andrew C's explanation is correct.
If you took it to the extreme, and connected the gearbox link rod to the very top of the gear lever, then the distance you would move the gear lever would be very short indeed, and also very hard to move due to the reduced leverage effect of the gear lever.

It would be the same as if you had sawed your lever of flush with where the gearbox link rod attaches top the gear lever.
You would have a very short throw gearlever, but it would also be about 6" farther away from your body (the length of the gear lever).
That may be OK if you have long arms, or if you are sat close enough to still reach it when in 1st, 3rd or 5th gears.

All the lever type quickshifts (Mk1 and 2 Escorts also) work on the same principle, of adjusting the relationship of the fulcrum point (pivot point) of the lever and the connection to the gearbox.

PLEASE EVERYBODY, DO NOT SAW YOUR GEARLEVER OFF AT THE GEARBOX LINK ROD POSITION.

If you do, you will probably NOT be able to change gear at all.
I am just trying to explain the mechanics of what is going on, with altered fulcrum points.
