intercooler swap
#1
Hi all, what are the complexities of swapping from the old style angled intercooler to the later type? Do I need to swap inlet manifolds? How involved is this and any other ancilleries that need to be changed? Many thanks,
Mark
p.s I already have carried out the post 97 face lift on the front end, so bonnet is correct for later style intercooler.

No response last time, so just bringing it back up. Realise I have to change inlet manifold and turbo as well. Air box looks different also? Any ideas? Jay?

Hi Mark,
My car has already been done and I helped Pete at ScoobySport do his.
The whole top end needs replacing, inlet manifolds, fuel rails, throttle body, dump valve, plumbing etc ...
It sounds a big job but if you can find a blown engine just pillage the bits you need.
The biggest problem is the throttle position sensor, 4 wires on old three on the new.
I would need to dive under the bonnet to find out which colours connect up.
If you are near Kent I would happily meet up to let you check it out.

Hi Mark, (emailed a copy to you)
Yes the turbo was changed but to a larger VF22, as the new inlet manifold has better torque
charictaristics so I went for more power. Added to a full Scooby Sport exhaust with no cats.
Adding a lightened steel billet fly wheel will return the responsiveness you loose from having turbo
lag.
The air box can be changed or junked for a cone filter. I am running an ITG panel with the new
airbox but will shortly replace it with a cone and remove the air flow meter once I have a link
fitted as it is no longer required.
The job will take two people 4 to 6 hours, so unless you are handy with mechanical stuff and can
afford to have the car off the road the price seems reasonable.
I would also look at getting silicone hoses fitted, Samco do a larger inlet pipe from the airflow
meter to the turbo, the one that goes under the inlet manifold. To fit this you will need a modern
power steering header tank.
Try Pete at ScoobySport (01268 590085) for fitting costs and Andy at Grade-A (01663 744114) for the
parts.
