Had this problem once, after lots of bad weather and being left for a few days. A good dose of WD40 on the spark plug leads (both ends) cleared it almost immediately.

If its the Camshaft sersor, or any other sensor, the Check Engine warning light will have come on, If not, its probably just excess fuel as you suggest. Mine does the same, usually after I've just stalled the engine when cold. Very embarrassing in the queue to leave the station carpark. No warning lights either.

Another small thing that it might be: fuel pressure.
I have troubles if I don't leave my car on "ignition" for a few seconds before cranking.
Failing that, I'd put money (but not a lot) on it being the crank position sensor. Causes all sorts of problems with starting on any fuel injected car, as my old Renault 19 16V testified to. Nightmare to trace the fault on the Renault, too
Try the fuel pressure thingy before spending money

Occaisonally my UK94 does this. Just the key and it will turn but not start. I thought that it was my immobilisor (sp) playing up as I know when its going to fail as I don't hear the fuel pressurise.
Turning the ignition off and back on again usually clears the fault, although it might take a couple of attempts.
I agree with Chiark, I need to leave my ignition on for a couple of seconds before turning over.
Thanks
Mark

Well done all of you that said fuel pressure.Took Subaru for service at my local dealer yesterday and they could find anything on diagnostic check. So they said leave the car on ignition for longer before cranking, fine with me.Hard job explaining to the wife.
Thank you all for replying, hope this works.

Mines getting worse....
Everytime I attempted to start yesterday it failed. The engine would just turn over and the check engine light did flick on and off which it was turning over.
It did start after 3 or 4 attempts though. I waited for several seconds before turning the key. I can hear the fuel pump "wwhhirrr click" and a gurgling noise of fuel.
On my own I don't get concerned ~ but my girlfriend was giving me some dodgy looks last night as we sat in the fuel station (as you do) turning the engine over....
I think its time it went to the doctors for a bit of a medical
Anyone any suggestions ???
Cheers

Maybe this is weather related? It happened to me when I left the car outside for an hour last evening.
It has happened to me only twice before and both when getting car out of garage first thing in morning.
I put it down to me doing something less than perfect which upset the equilibrium.
I'll mention it on the next service but no doubt "they all do that".

I've had this prob a few times now on a P1 which is only 5 months old. Has only shown itself since the recent bad weather.
With all this salty spray on the roads at the moment, some must get into the engine compartment, which if deposited on plug leads could provide a perfect track to earth.
A good clean with WD40 etc may well be the answer?
Cheers

Same problem !
I have recently swapped the throttle body and starting is now a pain.
Until I found the knack to it.
Turn ignition on
push accelerator fully down and release
push and hold
start car
Works every time.
But I am getting it checked when I rolling road it.

Nigel,
On mine the "Check engine" light flashed and you could hear all sorts of gubbins (technical I know) click under the bonnet but there was no sign of fire in the hole....
Subaru put their diagnostics thing on it and Yep f*cked crank sensor...bye bye 300 notes...

Yep...same snag on my car, happening more often lately. Haven't seen the check engine light staying on, just hope the diagnostic check will pick it up.
Had a similar snag on a Pug GTI years ago with the temperature sensor, maybe similar prob with scoob, not sure on damp HT leads being the problem (checked it out).
Just out of interest what MYs is this happening to, mine is MY98 thats had every fault applicable to that year.

Hurray.... Got it back finally.
Its nice to be back in something a little quicker than the Maestro which I've been running around...complete with blue haze.
Replaced the Sensor camshaft and the Sensor crank.

Get the same problem from time to time, just put foot flat to floor and turn key, eventually fires up.

You *******s!
I read apost about difficulty starting and what happens. I can't start my car!
No check engine light.
Foot flat to floor on throttle and it fires and runs normally.
Is this crank sensor failure or just salty leads?

The crank sensor failure caused starting problems about 9 times out of 10. Evenutually it would fire but was luck based rather than anything else.
Check engine light flashed...relays clicked under bonnet. All methods of starting tried and failed including Foot on floor.
Sorry to bring you bad luck.....

Interesting all having the same problem about the same time but lots of mention of depressing the throttle during starting which is a big no,no according to the manual.
My usual method is to turn ignition round to hear the fuel pump spin up and fuel pushed through, then turn key further and car fires first time.
Yex - who's coming to get me tonight when it won't start

Yeah as a general rule I never touch the throttle when starting. Just twist, wait for pump and twist again...bbrbrbrbrbrrbr (flat four engine note!) and off we go !
Until last week that was when it all went a little pear shaped
Its fine now thou'

My manual says that to start the car with a flooded engine you should depress the throttle fully and then start the car.
In my case I don't understand how the engine could be flooded as I have not been repeatedly trying to start it.

Hi there,
My MY98 had this problem on Christmas Eve of all nights, and again the day I took the dog to be neutered!
Could only start it with foot flat to the floor, would not recommend this be done too many times in case fuel fumes hit the cat though. Tried charging the battery and ECU reset, neither did anything.
Took the car to the dealer, they couldn't find anything so gave it the 2 year service (plugs, all fluids) and it's been perfect since.
I wonder if the dog knew he was off to the vet, and tampered with it :-)
Simon.

My UK 98 Turbo last week in the extreme cold, like -14C, took ages of cranking to get it going. I suspect (perhaps hope would be a better word!) that it was the cold and not anything expensive. Checked the oil, standard stuff the main agent uses (Shell Helix) and it did look very gloopy. Have heard of a Sport which has bother starting in the cold.
