Number of potential causes. If it only happens on the one gear, and the problem's been getting worse over time, the likeliest cause is a worn baulk ring in the fourth gear synchroniser unit.

Gearbox strip/rebuild necessary to fix. If the car's still under warranty, have a word with the dealer, as they should really sort it.

very common problem with P1 boxes and StiV's - as said above go see the dealer and get him to sort it under the warranty. Mine went 3 times ! There was a fix sent out to dealers so hopefully should sort it for good now

In fairness FB, the common problem on the MY99 gearboxes that had an official fix involved the car dropping out of fifth gear. Sounds like rimram's issue is slightly different.

I had a problem with MY99 grinding slightly when changing from 2nd to 3rd. Paul at Macs Power here in Ireland recommended a change to Mobil 1 75 W 90 gear oil which sorted it. Its been a year now and no probs! Could be worth a try.

Simon.
