Question

Has anyone tried a VF23 or alternative Turbo with a Prodrive PPP ? or at least a car with exhaust mods and a Prodrive ECU ?

Not really what you need to know but the VF23 is a super mod. I'm not sure about the PPP helping it as as far as I know the PPP reduces boost at higher revs and this is where the VF23 shines.

I will probably stand corrected.

As stated above, VF23 is, indeed, an excellent improvement over the standard TD04 unit supplied on the UK/Euro cars.

I would, however, advise extreme care if using VF23 (and other VF turbos with a possible exception of the VF28) on a UK/Euro car either with the standard or PPP ecu. They are all "fixed map" managements and cannot compensate correctly and in all areas required for a different turbocharger.

Beware and no unnecessary risks.

totaly agree with Q

I have a VF23 and Link ecu. i had to run the car with the standard ECU ONCE and the VF23 and it is not ideal and pretty much pointless as you don't extract all what the turbo can offer. defeats the purpose me thinks.

ECU first and then the VF23. it is one of the best upgrades i had done to the car .

sam

i hope that helps

Not much to comment. Feel free to think of it as if it was a VF28 (which it almost is).

I'm assuming with the V23/8/9 etc that they will work even beter with a free flow Mainfold, Down pipe & exhaust ??

It is better to do free flow Mainfold, Down pipe & exhaust before the Turbo ??

Cool

Be really careful on changing to a bigger turbo. VF23 can produce max 330HP with proper ECU tuning, change of down pipe and back box, air filter which is not a difficult part. Main problem is whether the engine (piston, conrod) can take the HEAT !!!
Euro/UK spec not using Forge piston like STI does. Please take this into consideration.

Holed my STD UK pistons using too much boost

Replaced with Cosworth items which are much better for higher boost. However the STD ECU still can't compensate enough to stop it knocking its self to death over 1.3 bar.

Anyone know if the P1 has the same forged pistons as the STI it's based on ?

I would suspect so as the P1 is an sti anyway! just with a few minor tweaks and a hefty increase in price over the import

Thanks for all the replys !

I was considering the VF23 in conjuction with a boost controller to keep boost at 1.2bar which I believe the standard ECU or Prodrive item can compensate for.

How easy is it to change to cosworth internals and how much does that cost ?

around
£600 for pistons
£800 for the rods

Hi All!

It is also worth bearing in mind that not all STi cars have forged pistons. They *may* have, but it's not guaranteed. They may also have a closed deck block, but again it's not guaranteed...

Also, bear in mind that there are very few, if any differences, internally, between Jap spec WRX and UK spec engines (up to 1999, then UK went up to 8.5:1 compression)... so the UK lumps are perhaps not quite as weak as everyone thinks. Heat can be a problem, so Water Injection is a very useful thing to have, if fitting a big turbo.

The VF29 is essentially the same as the VF28, but it does have a different compressor wheel with slightly different blade design, quite what this does to the compressor map, I do not know, not having seen the map 'n'all

Cheers,

Pat.
