Is there any thing i need when fitting my downpipe this weekend other than the pipe i.e gaskets, sealing ring, exhaust jointing paste etc,and what happens to the heat shields do you run with none on or just the turbo one,the reason i ask is i am fitting it at my mates workshop but i have to take everything i need as they will be closed, just trying to save a head ache on the day .. :confused

Check you lambda sensor to see if the thread is stripped before going if you've a late model car.
While I'd heard it was only my99 that had stripped threads due to overtightening in the factory.....I fitted one to my my00 last night same thing. Couldn't get the damned thing out - took the chance and removed the dp anyway and tackled it again on the bench. Lots of thread repair!
All the nuts and bolts are complete b*stards to remove - they must have a sumo wrestler fitting them in the factory!

Robert I fitted mine on Tuesday. Still suffering with grazed knuckles!!
Hardest part is removing the heat shields. Just when you think you've taken off all the bolts from the turbo part you have to dive underneath and take out two more that are not easy to see/get at. Rest of the job was easy apart from one of the bolts on top of the dwnpipe/turbo, had to cut that off. This was on my 93 WRX by the way. Hope this helps.

Robert, Recently had on my UK99 - I've left the heat shield off, and it doesn't seem to have caused any problems - mainly because it needs cutting to fit around new pipe, and the people fitting didn't do it!
If you want to know where cuts need to be look at

NDT,
Good question, personally I think yes, and there is a slight chance that the mid section being replaced might be enough to pass - as long as it's nice and hot.
Alternatively, find a helpful friendly garage to help you out. The garage that fitted mine took about 4 hours, but I understand that i can be done a lot quicker.

Rob,
I can do you a good deal on Ear Protectors
Look forward to hearing you before I see you on the 2nd March.
You should get a double glazing salesman round your area, he'd probably get a few customers now. Alas Ted Moult is no longer with us.
