It broadly depends on what MY your car is. If it is pre MY99 then I would choose a K&N replacement panel filter over the Subaru one, but for MY99/00 cars, there seems to be no benefit in fitting anything other than a Subaru one unless you are think of fitting a full induction kit. I would avoid Ramair or any oil impregnated filters as in my opinion they do more harm than good by damaging the mass air flow meter. Hope that helps.

I'd go along with what Tony has said. I used to have a K&N panel filter in my car (MY00). The real reason for fitting it was that the Magnex backbox I have was a little 'boomy' when first fitted and the K&N helped to reduce this. To be honest, with the price of a replacement 'genuine' filter, I can't see any harm in fitting the K&N, which is a similar price. Incidently, when Prodrive fit the PPP, they don't change the standard filter.
I now run an HKS induction system, which sounds great and hasn't caused any problems (no real reason for changing, just got offered the chance to get one at a reasonable price).
Cheers
Chris
