Knock Under 2000rpm

HELP! (originally posted in General)
I have just read the buyers guide in EVO and quout" a knocking noise undr 2000rmp is bad news"
Well my car has very recently developed exactly that AND has started to consume oil a bit!
Its got 100,000 miles on it but FSH?
If I go to my dealer (wo is ver nice) will it be huge bill time or should I go to one of the independant scooby specialits...or sell it.
HAve I got a slapper!

Granturismo,
Get a compression test done to check the condition of the oil control rings (i.e. now broken), and that the cylinder leakage is within tolerence - if so don't worry too much. Unless you can get it fixed out of warranty as a goodwill gesture, it probably isn't worth stripping the engine at your expense. A bit of piston slap when cold is nothing to worry about - is it still there at around 1800rpm on a light throttle when warmed up?. If it goes away when warm, it is fine.
You oil loss could be a blocked breather, a leak collecting on the undertray, or signs of a turbo problem (possible given the mileage), or something else more mundane (i.e. less expensive).
Get it checked properly, and you'll have a better idea of the appopriate course of action..
