FMIC air flow direction?
#2
Callum, I asked Chris this but he never replied. It will flow both ways but the efficiencey of that flow depends whether the "end of the bar design" is the same at each end of the intercooler.

Trying emailing APS in Auz, I would be interested to know as well.

Thanks for the reply David. I don't think it would be possible to mount the D/R 500 back to front due to the solid pipes coming off the end tanks being directed towards the engine bay but no matter I know what you mean.
I've just had a reply from APS, excellent service as I just emailed before leaving work at 6:30! They also reckon it makes no difference which direction the air flows in. So looks like it's time for some closer inspection to see if we can make some space for a man sized air filter

Conrad, yes, but I'm thinking that there's no easy way to shorten the inlet tract without swapping the APS LH pipe around a little.
I don't like the way the compressor outlet hose ducks & dives either so if it's practical then it may provide a small improvement in more than one way

Yes I see, but if you rotate the turbo you can come out of the turbo, under the manifold then through the FMIC the other way, reverse the throttle body to the front and you have shortened the length or....

Aahh...yes Super Lemon still looks very nice even though I've seen the pictures more than once kind of like car p*rn & quite a project
I'm still being a wus about loosing my creature comforts and having to re-engineer the alternator positon, etc so reversing the inlet manifold is not on the cards ATM.
cheers,
callum

Does the APS have the same size inlet and outlet pipe then?
Mine will run either way.. but currently just wanted it on there so it running as can be seen here left side to throttle body atm.
I will eventually turn the intake around and twist the turbo..
Turbo side currently steps up to the 70mm intercooler inlet on one side and the throttle body side remains at 70mm..

Follow the throttle cable from the left of the engine bulk head and it enters the righthand throttle body just behind the dipstick where there is a small pulley wheel.. presume it must have some mechnism to keep the other throttle body the other side at the same setting.
So the throttle bodies are just below where the intercooler pipework connects to where the intake manifold would be..
Sort of..
I want one..

Simon,
The APS hard pipes are different sizes left and right.
The compressor outlet/FMIC inlet is probably around 2.25" I/D & the throttle body feed/FMIC outlet is more like 2.75"/3". APS have suggested this is important though there was no explantion. I guess that the larger airflow of the outlet pipe makes it easier for the engine to draw air in through the TB. However, it could be that this just proves how little I know about airflow

I think it is very important.. I won't even try and explain as I am not totally sure why you need larger pipe on one side than the other.. I know a good intercooler adds turbulance to the charge I believe to aid cooling.. it helps flow speed as the air will be hot and get sucked away from the turbo quicker and slow down through the intercooler and has to be compress back down to the outlet pipe.
Bu99er I tried explaining.. anyway..
2.75inches is 25.4mm * 2.75 = 69.85mm
2.25inches is 25.4mm * 2.25 = 57.15mm
So roughly 70mm and 60mm.. so you could reduce both pipes to 60mm but I don't think that will have a good effect on flow..
Might be worth getting it modified to 70mm both ends.. then you can run a reducer on one side, which ever side is connected to the turbo?
Either that or buy an intercooler which runs either direction.
