Piston Slap - Subaru's latest view
#1
I reported in this thread about getting piston slap in a replacement block.
Several letters back and forward with Subaru UK has clarified their position:
Piston slap in 1997/1998 models was addressed by replacing the short block if slap was still evident while the engine was warm. However any blocks/pistons fitted up until December 2000 were of original identical design and would therefore be likely to start slapping again.
Their current view, is that no case of piston slap had ever deteriorated into anything more serious, and that they would be no longer replacing any pistons or blocks. Pausing only to wonder why they did replace so many blocks at the time, and then in December 2000 to finally introduce revised pistons to retrofit, I obviously took much solace from those reassuring words.
I replied back that I trusted therefore that my trade-in value at a Subaru dealership would be completely unaffected by slap.
I believe their response confirming my view has been delayed by the Christmas post....

I didn't dare put my MY97 on the market as the slap is so bad I'd have to pay to get rid of it.
I have never had a car that makes such an appalling noise after 80,000 miles. If it had been into the mid 100K then fair enough, but this started back at 45,000 and has got steadily worse.
The repair cost means that I'd have to really love the car to go ahead with mending it.
Unfortunately, my love doesn't stretch that far, so its being sent back to the HP company for them to deal with.
