Hi,

Does anyone have the full specs for the various replacement IHI turbos (VF22/23/24/28/29), i.e. information like A/R, housing size, and wheel fin diameter?

I've heard a lot about how the VF turbos are bigger and meaner, but I'd like to compare with other first hand experience on how they stand up to the TD05 on the MY94-MY96. Visually it doesn't look "that" much bigger, and having driven a few cars with the VF turbos, spool-up time for a roller-bearing isn't much to shout about either, versus a hybrid TD05 fitted with a 18G wheel (which can flow as much). I'm looking to upgrade my MY94 turbo and I could really do with some advice from the experts.

Comments please? Thanks!

Unhappy

Hey, what happened to all you folks who fitted the VF turbos??? Was it just based on hearsay?

Jack,

It's a bit later over here !!!

The TDO5 is a VERY good turbo, and very underated.

If the VF turbo's are re-mapped correctly, they will always spin up more quickly than their "equivelent" size TDXX, sleeve baring turbo.

Personally, I would stick to the TDO5. They are VERY strong, and depending on the spec of your hybrid, will probably flow as much as any VF, hybrid, or not.

It would be worth looking at getting the "intake" pipe converted to a "straight" entry though (that right angle is pretty restrictive), but you would also have to swap the inlet manifold to the later '97/98, so you can run under it, to a filter. This mod seems to work very well.

You would have to swap the manifold anyway, if you wanted to try a VFXX.

Mark.

Thumbs up

Mark,

That's one big reason why I like the TD05, cos it's strong and it's "repairable", and I quietly suspected it's underrated like you said. You're dead right about the air intake pipe, on a MY94 there are at least three right angle arms between the air box and turbo, it's absolutely disgusting.

Now that you've mentioned it, if I need to change my manifold to fit a VF turbo, it doesn't sound so viable anymore. Thanks for letting me know!

Still no specs on VF turbos though....

Best rgds,
Jack
