Question

Hi All,

Pulled off rather quickly today with around 5k rpm. Noticed the clutch started slipping rather than biting for around 2 or 3 seconds. Not noticed this before and seems OK now. Only other time I've been this brutal was in the wet and got wheelspin.
Clutch has done 50k miles.

Is it dying or am I being paranoid?

Thanks
Lee

Lee,

Part of me says you are heading for a clutch change. To me, 50k is good. However, on my old GSI, I would occasionaly get slip when pulling away with high rpm's. This would last in to 2nd under full throttle. But I did 36+k on that clutch, 2 track days at the 'Ring plus a fair bit of grief from my right foot, and it never gave up.

The car had over 100k on the clock when I got the Scoob, and I didn't have a clutch change on it. So it is possible it was still on the original.

My feeling is that the clutch has over heated and thats caused it to slip.

Any1 else agree or disagree with this?

I would worry when it starts to slip when you boot it in gear.

P.

PS. Another thought. Could the diffs be spinning away the extra power? Dunno much about how they work, so I could be talking bollocks on this.

PPS. Could have had a load of crud on the clutch plate.

Cool

As sith says, I'd worry when you get clutch slip when "booting it" whilst in gear. 50k is good for a scooby clutch.

In gear clutch slip will generally first appear when hitting peak torque/boost in a highish gear, maybe when climbing a hill. :yikes:

Thanks,

Got about 2 months warranty left so I'll keep a close eye on it. I was taking a relative out for her first spin so had been giving it a little stick before the 5k launch so it may have been hot.

She's now agreed that her 1.3 F reg Escort isn't that fast .

LOL

you want to try doing a 5K launch in a sport. You just sit there with a horible smell coming from under the car

Dont worry about it, just dont abuse the beasty, if it doesnt slip when in high gear on full boost you dont have a problem.

Thanks John,

Don't usually give it that much abuse.

I'll make sure I introduce myself at Donnington on the 30th, only managed a couple of hours the last time at Donno and you were a little busy in the Westie ( prior to blow up )

Cheers
Lee
