dont want to sound like an idiot but i am very confused...
i am looking to fit an induction kit to my 93 wrx i was advised by one guy that i should get a HKS as it the best and most suitible for this car...sounds good i think
then i asked another specialist and he says "HKS are desinged for racing they dont filter fine particles and can let in particles which could result in engine damage but this is not a problem as racing engines are rebuilt every other race etc" he recomended K N
intead. but WTF! is there any truth in what he said? i am confused as to which induction kit to buy now so any advise would be apprecited.

The HKS, AFAIK, filters perfectly well, but the gunk it uses on the filter can screw up your MAF. I don't think it should actually be too much of a problem on your particular car (the MAF is a toughy but may still need cleaning from time to time with an HKS system) but personally I still wouldn't risk it... the K&N is a proven reliable system with plenty of flow & very good filtration.
It's not going to make a performance difference whichever one you pick anyway

All i can say is that i have had the HKS on MY97 WRX
for 3 years and no problems.
Never used any special fluid on filter as i dont think you have to with the HKS,
Gary

The latter could be true. HKS filters are mainly used on their big bhp cars that run on a dragstrip or around a circuit 3 or 4 times and that's it. Same goes for Blitz.
They are not really suitable for daily driving on the street where you can have construction areas with high dust or a truck in front of you throwing up road dust etc...although many peeps use them in Japan, that's a different story....

Go for K&N or even better Apex'i, the dust retaining of those is simply amazing. Just be sure that the kit you buy has at least 2 mounting brackets and if possible is of a dry-type filter (BTW the Apex'i comes with 2 brackets that fit PERFECTLY and is a dry type filter)

I had the HKS induction kit on a MY95WRX and ran it for 3 years without any problems.

I got fed up with the noise which became tiring on motorway driving in combination with my HKS superdrager exhaust. I would advise listening to someones car first before buying - you get a strong sucking moise on acceleration and dump valve whoosh on letting off.

In terms of performance, I think the car does pull better in the upper rev range but loses the low mid range torque. When I took it off and refitted the standard air box I noticed the MAF did have a layer of grime on it, which cleaned off easliy with carb cleaner. This occured despite frequent foam filter changes.

I think now with the standard airbox the car runs a bit smoother, not tending to splutter as much especially when cold. The low mid range torque seems a bit better.

My advice would be to get full decat exhaust and 'scoobyecu' for most gains per pound and reasonable everyday driving.
