Hi all,

I've just fitted a Pipercross air filter to my MY98 standard WRX. No problems in fitting, but one question. There is a small metal extension tube coming out at right angles from the main metal tube supplied with the filter. It says in the instructions to connect the breather pipe to this and shows a photo of this pipe and where it's coming from (front left of the engine when looking at it from the front with two other tubes coming from the same 'ish' place). However, my car does not have this pipe at all!? So, should I a) cover up the tube so no air can get in, or b) put a small mini filter 'me mate Dave' gave me, over it, so filtered air can get in.
My car seems to run fine whatever, but I'd like to do what's best.
My only reservation about 'b' is that any air that goes in there doesn't need to pass the air flow meter to enter the engine - could that mess things up a bit even if it is only a small amount? What's this pipe for and why hasn't my car got it? Is it a WRX thing or a MY98 thing?
Thanks for any help.

You don't need the pipe. It is only needed for pre 97 cars. On your model the filter should fit straight onto the square flange from the original airbox with the 4 bolts and a gasket.

I know someone with an MY99 UK that has the same filter and I'm sure he does have this breather pipe!? So do you think I should block off the tube or not then?

Cool

I had the breather hose thingamaboob on my MY00 GT...if I were U I'd block off the pipe with a bung of some sort, otherwise unfiltrated air will get into the engine that way, bye-bye turbo...

Don't use a small filter, block it off.

I think I'll do just that. After all, no air could previously get in, except through the main filter, so I'll keep it that way.
Thanks for your advice.

Assuming it is not in use - block it and make sure that whatever you use is airtight and not likely to get sucked into the inlet.

Ironically - i saw a WRX with a Pipercross filter @ the weekend - he dabd blocked his with a self tapping screw.

Well spotted Paul...

A screw seemed the perfect answer
