turbo heat shield
#1
I have just replaced the down pipe on MY94 WRX with the Scoobysport DP.
Big thanks to Scoobysport who gave advice over the phone on what to do with the hole for the Lambda sensor at the top of the pipe, even though I bought it second hand off the BBS never had to by a spark plug for an exhaust before.)
Any way the purpose of the post is to ask, is the heat shield for the turbo needed? I was having a bit of trouble getting the top half of the shield back on. And the bottom half bolts to the old DP but there are no places for it to bolt to the new one (may rattle).
I am sure it would go on but its a fiddly little bugger.
Has anybody run their car without the shield in place?? I can see why Subaru have put it there to stop the surrounding area getting to hot and to cannel cool air to the turbo housing (also to keep cold water from the road splashing the turbo I suppose).
But would it be safe, beneficial or detrimental to my car to leave it off?
Hope someone with experience and or technical knowledge could set me straight
Cheers
Iain
PS WRX sounds much better with the new pipe and its a lot lighter to (the old one landed on my head when I was taking it off bloody heavy) big thanks to Scoobysport I am now a happy bunny.

Hi Yee,
Subaru put the heat shield on for a good reason, that being, the turbo generates a lot of heat. Me not being an expert - and I am honest - the heat could damage the wiring and rubber hoses. Also, it is very close to the brake fluid reservoir and you don't want that getting too hot!
Keep it on.
Scotty.

Give the one who knows (Croney) a call - when he did our two MY00 cars they took an angle grinder or similar to the heat shield to "modify" it, it will then fit.
PS - if you wanted to get rid of the flameouts/popping from the exhaust (but I can't imagine why!!!)you could wire the extra spark plug up to an HT lead!!! Might get a bit more power too LOL - afterburner - now THAT'S what I call a mod.

Thanks for the advice Guys, guess I better put it back on then.
I will give Scoobysport a call on the way to modify the shield.
Dave rather than wire up the spark plug how about we fit a fuel injector now that WOULD get the exhaust popping, just imagine the flames out the back then, great for those traffic light drag races with the M*X P***R lot. Afterburners On
Cheers
Yee
PS Subaru put the cat in the DP for a reason but we all took that off

Even better, pull up in front of a Max Power car at the lights, give it welly on take off and melt the front off their car!!
The rumour about standard d/p is that Pete Croney paid Subaru to make it so crap so he could be paid so much by us for his product to replace it!! (only joking Pete!!) :S
