Hi All
Been thinking about replacing the centre pipe (probably with the Magnex centre section as I'm already running with a Magnex backbox).
I have looked at loads of old posts on the subject, but there does seem to be a bit of confusion.
Do Magnex still make the centre section without the silencer/resonator?
If they do, is there a noticable difference between them (performance/noise etc).
How much should I be paying?
Cheers
Chris

Personally i went for the resonated pipe just to keep the noise down to more acceptable levels. I had heard PPPd cars with the same system except they had the SS straight thru centre and that was too much for me.
Certainly i noticed the benefit of the resonated section over my STI centre pipe.
About 80-85 quid for the resonated pipe me thinks, 20 quid odd less for the straight thru
Speak to Kevin at Falkland Performance. They give you SIDC discount too

I had a centre section custom made by Scoobysport with no resonators.
Its a straight through 3inch jobby.
It sounds superb. And I do have PPP.
Soundwise it really starts to sing from about 3500rpm onwards. Below that it just sounds good.

I agree with Sunlip - the centre pipe creates a LOT of noise.
I have a full Scoobysport System (Grp A D/P, Ctr pipe & Rear Box) but swapped the Ctr pipe back to the Std - it's much quieter. This keeps the benefit of the D/P and is a quick job to swap back to get the full benefit.
I would definitely say find a car with the set up you want and spend a little time in it before parting with any cash!!

Thanks Guys
Looks like the silenced centre section then -I want to keep the car (relatively) civil as it is my everyday transport and not just a weekend car.
Cheers

Chris, your more than welcome to listen to mine. Although a LINK ecu makes the exhaust much less barkier than the PPP ECU, not sure about standard ECU effect on noise levels - yes people, the different ECUs do have an impact.

Alex,
Try the magnex decatt centre, at 85 quid and half an hour on the ramp its very cost effective. Same goes for a silenced Ss centre i guess. I run Link at 1.2 bar held, other Link owners who have changed to it also report a leaner mixture, ceterus paribus, so it does work!
I still think the biggest gains are in the SS DP, and i dont think noise is an issue with the Link ECU. Certainly, my car is not boomy or too loud, sounds lovely when the air is damp and cold....sometimes i wish it would be more so the rest of the time though
As you are in London, i extend my invitation to you also.
Sunil
Chris, you around Fri night?

while we on the subject of centre sections can anyone explain the difference between PE's and the Magnex as the Magnex is roughly £100 and PE's is twice the price.

Hi,
further to this subject - I have a linked MY98 UK running 1.15bar boost with a SS backbox . The rest of the exhaust system is standard.
I am considering a mid section replacement, or possibly a downpipe. I would like to make the engine more free revving at high rpm without either introducing a lot more noise or (preferably) not having to do a downpipe replacement every time I need an MOT from next year onwards.
Any substancial increase in noise isn't really on. Would a mid section with a resonator or silencer improve engine breathing on it's own (without increasing noise too much), or is a downpipe required?
I'd appreciate your advice and comments.
Rgds,
Alex

If you would like another comparison I am running a UK MY99 with Magnex decat centre (no resonator box), Scooby sport back box and link ecu. The effect is very good, both from an aural and performance perspective. The magnex centre does make the car slightly louder but not excessively. Furthermore, I do quite a lot of motorway driving and as yet have not found the slight increase of noise inside to be a problem at all.
I am in London on Friday, so if you fancy another car for comparison give me a shout.
Cheers

Sunil/thumper/Bajie,
It would be excellent if we could meet up to compare. I'm in Earlsfield (SW London) - let me know if you're up for it over the weekend (Sat/Sun).
Cheers,
Alex
