Oily deposit n/s front wheel arch ?
After running my MY96 hard during the recent Easytrack day at Abingdon airfield I noticed oily deposits on the n/s front wheel arch.
Looked as if I'd run through a small patch of oil, nothing on the tyre though. Oil was quite thin in appearance and dark. A small amount had collected on the front spoiler lip where it meets the arch, just enough to create one small drop on the tarmac which is how I spotted it.
Chatting to another scooby owner (99 or 00 wagon) I noticed EXACTLY the same oily deposit in the same place on the arch.
Can anyone shed any light on this at all ?
I also developed a 'rattle' at low revs, like a heatshield or exhaust resonance rattle. Maybe I should take things easier on the track....or maybe not !
Cheers,
Neil.

Mark,
Thanx, someone else suggested overflow too, I'll check it out tonight.
Were you by any chance at Bob Rawles last Sunday ? Your number plate looks familiar !
Neil.

You might find that the problem is caused by a leaking oil seal and gaiter at one end of the drive shaft. I had this on a MY98 and it allows a small amount of oil to get onto the driveshaft and then to be thrown off to collect wherever it hits the car. You might also notice a slight burning oil smell when you stop if the oil lands anywhere on the exhaust system.
Chris.

Thanx Chris. I've got the car booked in for its service on the 12th but the symptoms haven't reappeared since last wednesday. Definately worth checking though.
Neil.
